Get out of the woods

In Communication, Griot, News, Self Improvement on January 30, 2017 at 7:40 am

the-woodsOne day when I was in 7th grade –
Going to Forest Oak Middle – where adolescents behave,

I was a walker to school and I’d arisen a little late.
Needed to arrive at school on time to keep admin trouble off my plate.

I distinctly remember cutting across a large field
That nearly confirmed Jason and Freddy Krueger were real.

It’s was a very risky feel but had I been late in time
A letter was coming home and Moms would be in my behind.

So I forged ahead in my girl shoes named CANDIE,
With blades of grass between my toes I arrived quick and felt dandy.

candies-shoes

I don’t think they’re #AllTerrain shoes… but they brought me through.

And there across the forested brush was my middle school.
I saw the social clicks: the populars, the jocks and the fools.

Just slightly forward of all of the clicks – towards the curb,
I saw my beloved crew, a pack of Honor Nerds.

And in that pack true concern was active,
I was spotted crowning the forest by Katrinna Mathis!

This was my best girlfriend from the Forest Hill hood,
She yelled out: “Oh God Qui – Get out of the woods!”

GET OUT OF THE WOODS? I suppose it’s the right call.
However I made it to school in record time with no stall.

My feet were a mess – I was delivered by “the walk.”
When traipsing through the woods – I’m focused; rarely balk.

Sometimes life is hairy and sometimes you’re the captain.
I challenge you to rise to the occasion – and forfeit saving cute fashions.

Forego the extras, the boo-boo, the ungroomed -ish…
And find your way through it all. I believe YOU’VE GOT THIS.

I had THAT – the day KAT saw me coming out of he woods.
Though being cared for, if I wasn’t prepared for — my best friends acknowledgment was good!

She didn’t want me out there! She didn’t want me lost.
I’m Qui
Encouraging you on your journey. Be the captain. Walk #TheWalk.

On that flight from Dallas

ABOUT My immediate neighbors in the air…

I’ll be quick and make this short
I sat in row 1 in the middle of two sports.

Both were of senior age but not together.
All of us on our way to enjoy the Phoenix weather.

The lady to my left was fighting Parkinson‘s — HARD.
At times, uncontrollably – for her, I prayed to the Lord.

.

parkinsons-collage

She was sweet as pie and told me how much she loves her grands and 3-month old great grand.
Though even sweeter tales came via the right from the senior man.

This was only his first flight since being shipped out to Vietnam.braided-qui-red-lips
His outer appearance was aged though he bore youthful charm.

He complimented my hair. I’m wearing micro braids.
He talked to me like we were old friends. I dig his way.

He’s been married for 42-years and is a proud snow bird.
He usually lives in Kansas but WINTER IN PHX – is #WORD.

He went to Dallas because his sister passed still he remained strong.
He’s got Hawaii plans – he plans to live long.vietnam-soldier-of-peace

I love that. We should all love life with no fear.
Had his father seen 2017, he’d have been married 70 years.

His father and mother were married for 69 years! What you say!?

The day for him is young, for his 50th wed anniversary – he plans to play.

That’s when he wants to go to Hawaii.
I yielded to his zest. Yes – nothing could stop me.

He’s in his mid 60’s and making plans like he’s 30.
If you are younger and doing less – you’re living dirty!

Now I don’t usually talk on flights because my voice carries.
When I do, the tales I tell, the public – near, naturally marries.

That means FOLKS FOR MILES seem to hear me and respond,
I’m Qui
And Dallas was good to me especially the #ReturnFlightBond.

Cleaning Up

In Communication, Griot, Self Improvement, weightloss on January 27, 2017 at 3:53 am

cleaning-mop-mickeyOkay, the days are coming and going fast
I’m always in search of something “to last.”

Perhaps a lovely moment I don’t want to pass
I want to #DoIT slow, #EatClean and #BurnFat.

So I’m doing that! Today is (again) day one.
Holiday eating was good, the endless cookies were fun.

But this arse of mine – in width needs to run.
The junk food and I, again have reached DONE.

We all have a relationship with food and it is a give and take.
You can have it deep fried, freeze dried, pan seared or baked.

Pan seared and baked are better options as Spring is set to arrive.
So knowing there’ll be more of my skin showing I’ll do this right.

No fat, no sugar and absolutely no carbs.
My thoughts: focused. My help from the Lord.

Good health is a detoxers reward.
Eating clean isn’t easy – nor is it too hard.

In 2014 I dropped 30 pounds from just dropping fast food.
I’ve enjoyed a drive thru or two since then and find myself in the mood

To detox again, though I’ve gained nothing on the lost 30.
I’m eating clean again because Oct-Dec doc’d me eating dirty.

Today is Day 1. of my 2017 clean up.
Care to join me in the detox cut?

Care to shape up your gut and your butt?
Go clean, no candy, cakes or ice cream – Give it up!

Yep, #ScrewIt, let’s do it. Let’s polish up for Spring with no rut,
I’m Qui
Looking for a finer she – I’m committed to Cleaning Up.

Hand me that lettuce….

Post that round trip flight…

In Communication, Self Improvement, Travel on January 25, 2017 at 7:35 am

life-is-a-box-crayonsIt’s good to be back! I’ve had fun – I have.
I flew out to Dallas and had a Fam blast!

I did fly coach but it felt like first class.
Solo: I handled my business and I busted my ass.

Once I got to the DFW my car rental and hotel were ready.
I with my laptop, a mop and creative energy was steady.

So much happened that all of my tools and skills were on deck.
I was pretty deep off in the woods though strong was my connect.

CLo came through – Mr. Logistics doesn’t play.
CLo is Carlos Ramierez of Choice Valet.

Stephanie came through and then the two of us #CameUp.
She’s my HS alumni living in the Dalworthington cut.

Joe G turned out and brought CJ with him.
CJ is that unbiased beacon when things get dim.

Joe G is my rock, my baby brother, my go-to guy.
The love in the DF-Dub always gets me high.

I’m elevated, I’m happy and it’s good to be home.
I learned so much in Dallas – increased the size of my dome.

From Arizona to Cali, to Dallas and New York:
I have a thing going on between my arrive and depart.

I was in town because Healthcare Workers could not deny
That my dads health is in the last stages (prostate cancer) & he may die.

I was encouraged and didn’t cry but took a flight out
I showed up in person to see what the “hoopla” was about.

Dads homestead was a wreck – there’s no room for any border.
My dear old dad’s square footaged pad was decorated by a hoarder.

Me? Besides a little OCD, I think cleaning is quite therapeutic.
So when I saw the periodical fuss and tinsels of dust – to clean up? I couldn’t refuse it.

It was a HGTV scene to be seen – how I transformed that place.
I hired a young male team, strong and lean – then we put a smile on Dads face.

I restored that place.

Suddenly dad sat up, smiled, and started thanking me a bit.
Then he reverted to his usual self and started talking cash -ish. 😀

It was good to have his spirit back. Helping him did a lot for me,
I’m Qui
That blush invoking she, that flight to Dallas did a world of good for me.
Ooo Wee.

Post that round trip flight…
Fam: I’m feeling alright.

Blush

In Communication, Griot, Self Improvement on January 23, 2017 at 5:14 am

blush-champagneIf your face is perfectly pitched and then becomes a bit flushed,
whether for good or bad – we call it a blush.

Today I am blushed and it shows past my red/brown melanin.
There’s a cherry noir rouge at the cheeks of my skin.

This day is still early though my happiness didn’t just begin.
I’ve been #PayingItForward to no end – heck I’m on a philanthropy binge.

.

and I LOVE IT!
If feeling good was tangible thing –
I’d )))HUG((( it.

I’m feeling it right now and passing to you– in a rush!
There’s no time to not let your little light shine or exhibit a little blush.

Do that thing that makes you happy, then do it again and again.
Go out and speak to a stranger – go out and help a dear friend.

Monday is perfect to start all over again.qui-love-jan22-2017
Make it an opportunistic begin.

The thing that makes me blush is seeing others that I lift up #Smile.
It is nothing out my energetic spill to help someone to easier cross a mile.

Ooo wee and good morning. Good Lawd, I shall not hush,
Today is Monday baby and I’m about that proactive blush.

What about you, what have you got up for today and such?
I’m Qui
This day is about WE. Upgrade your character – add some blush.

Word of the day…

In Communication, Griot, Self Improvement on January 20, 2017 at 1:12 am

word-counter-sign.jpgI rarely have a WORD to say – in fact,
most times I open my mouth there’s a paragraph.

So A WORD? I may not have one in singular,
but if I had to grab one, I might grab: STAR.

I’m feeling like a STAR today.
The wind in my hair – I’m prime for some play.

It’s Friday, an #ImAliveDay and I really can’t argue.
There’s nothing going on that could effect my song;
my stardom time is due.
Yours too.

So do join me today in celebrating yourself.
Grab your shades and scarf and exhibit top shelf.

Why? Because you should and you absolutely can.
If you don’t celebrate you – then who will man?

In the midst of all of that, I’ve had an eureka; an ooo wee!
I’ve come up with another WORD! The word is: ME.

When you say that word it is always in reference to you.
So no, I don’t have A WORD today, more like a paragraph or two.

The weekend is upon you, stay up and celebrate your good.
I’m Qui
and this is a good time to reconnect with good folks in your hood.

We’re all STARS. Let’s constellate!
Another WORD OF THE DAY has to be #RELATE.

IN Per SUIT

In Communication, Griot, Networking, News, Self Improvement, TV Shows, Video on January 18, 2017 at 7:48 am

byron-allen-suit-sharpWhat up kinfolk? What’s good and what has happened
that caused a $10 Billion Lawsuit to be filed by Byron Allen?

No, I don’t suppose this is #NewNews, but it’s news all the same,
the lawsuit was filed in respect to Charter Communications and its BOS frame.

BOS. What does the acronym stand for?
Black Owned Stations. Byron wants to know “What’s the score?

I think we have two, but could we have more?
Are attempts to own black stations being thwarted at the door?

I remember many years back when Bill Cosby wanted to get a station,
not long after — allegations raped him of his reputation.

Thank God for the OWN station, though Byron says there could be more,
he got with the crunchers and did the numbers and is confident before us is a locked door.

In October 2016, a judge ruled the suit to go forth, to proceed.
Black folks are major consumers, may we have a little more ownership of feed?

Great progress is in the works but no victory for WE, though Mr. Allen is on the case.locked-door
I know you remember Byron Allen from occupying yesterdays late night broadcast space?

Well his drive has not waned or aged and nor has his face.
I won’t lie, I’m a writer ’til I die – and I’m glad Byron’s on the case.

What good is a scripted create if it has no prospect of a home?
How many writers are praying for outlets; fighting off ‘popularity in the dead zone.’

An artists appreciation is usually on the rise
when he produces much and then he suddenly dies.

What the what-what? Ain’t nobody got time for that anymore.
So God bless Byron Allen on his “judicial access
regarding BOS” score.

The battle is lain before us and I’m sure it will be long and hard.
I will continue to write a reflective insight and continue to pray to the Lord…

I really need Byron Allen to make headway today for many of our tomorrows.

Good Morning Monday

In Communication, Griot, Self Improvement on January 16, 2017 at 6:40 am

fresh-mondayGood Morning Monday, I love you and as soon as I opened my eyes
I was delighted to see you, excited to breathe – Ooo, so glad to be alive.

And so 4am came quick – it feels like I just laid down.
I remember lulling off with a smile and waking up with a frown.

No, I’m not mad it’s just that last night was a hard lay.
I mean, you should see my hair – a coiffed mane despair – I’m not Beyoncé.

But hey the day is young and I am happy.
My hair is un-permed, strong, soft and nappy.qui-nappy-happy

The sun is not yet up and already, I’m in pursuit to go.
I’ve drank my lemon water, now I’m working on my jo.

Oh! Today is poised to be a winner!
I do love Mondays – a natural beginner.

A straight-away kick-starter.
Corsets, strings and belts of garter,

Binds of goods; score well in barter.
Do your research, be efficient, work smarter.

Yes, things could be harder but only if you yield that way.
Put no energy into negativity on this beloved day.

Good Morning Monday! I’m so very glad to see you again!
I’m Qui
a naturally happy she – ready to embrace you; another begin.

Yes-Yes,
Bring it in!

Black-ish Racket: Play Ball!

In Communication, Griot, Networking, TV Shows, Video on January 13, 2017 at 7:30 am

BLACK-ISH

Wednesday night on ABC a rather direct episode of Black-ish aired.
Dre, played by Anthony Anderson went where most scripts don’t dare.

During a round table discussion at the marketing firm
the president-elect came up and dialogue began to burn.

Dre’s co-workers went around the table expressing their despair vs. hope
and most were perplexed, admitting: for the pres-elect, ‘they did not vote.’

But then there was one young lady sitting across from Daphne (played by Wanda Sykes)
who did vote for the pres-elect; her name is Laura and she happens to be white.

Suddenly the script got hype and the mostly male co-worker situation started to question
what was on her mind in the booth? With debated breath they insisted confession.

The young lady at the round table expressed her truth-in-thinking the elect would be fair –
and did not wake up post election like her co-workers with a pitted feeling of despair.

When the mic was turned to Dre
at first he didn’t have much to say.

But when pressed by peers on the subject
Dre had much to say and with clarity it erupted.

The writers of the LEMONS episode were sharp in laying their delivery
When Dre spoke on his feeling, I was chilled and it went right though me.

The monologue was touching and Dre was convicted in his necessary release.
In short he said, ‘I’ve always supported this country, even when it doesn’t support me.’

 Ooo Wee.
You see?
That’s what’s it like to be BLACK LIKE ME.

Dre continued at the round table expressing how he remains hopeful and presses on…
he is not unique in his stance, this is many a Black persons song.

So let me let you hear the monologue as not to quote him wrong:

Watch It Quick – it’s the most reflective say!
Again Watch It Quick- before YT takes it away.

I couldn’t quote it word for word, so I found this cheesy shot.
Give me a few minutes to compose a word-for-word on this slot.

In the meantime enjoy the view
the writers of this series are thinking about you.

The writers of this series are thinking about us as a whole.
Racism is an ugly mother and the –ish is way past old.

I love this series because it does its best
to build a bridge that connects us at the vest…

@The heart.
What Dre expressed needed to be said… it’s a start.

I hope that you saw the series on Wednesday if not, try and cop it ON DEMAND.

2 Hours of TAKING THE STAGE…

In Communication, Griot, Movies, Music, Networking, Self Improvement, TV Shows on January 12, 2017 at 10:28 pm

taking-the-stageOMG! What an awesome broadcast. Did you see it?
I’m glad I did or I wouldn’t have really believed it
would be so good and so deeply uplifting.
I found the broadcast while channel surfing and sifting

because I don’t watch a lot of network television
I blindly landed on The African American Music and Stories that Changed America – rendition.

I hadn’t seen any commercials advertising the event
and there,  the better part of my evening, 2-hours were spent.

mary-j-blige-taking-the-stage

Mary J Blige opened the show – it was a very appropriate and proper note

There was Usher, Fantasia, Christina Aguilera and those Broadway singers too,
There was Common, Dougie Fresh and Chuck D reciting Paul Laurence Dunbar and Langston Hughes.

There was Gladys Knights, but no Pips, Mary Mary and Shirley Caesar —
John Legend, Stevie Wonder and the Howard University Choir – no preacher.

ABC SPECIAL - TAKING THE STAGE: AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSIC AND STORIES THAT CHANGED AMERICA, a star-studded special commemorating the opening of the Smithsonian's new National Museum of African American History and Culture, taped at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, 9/23/16, will air as a two-hour primetime special on THURSDAY, JANUARY 12 (9:0011:00 p.m. ET) on the ABC Television Network. (Photo by Fred Watkins/ABC via Getty Images) ANGELA BASSETT

Angela Bassett introduced the memories of Lena Horne, Nina Simone and Billy Holiday

And a host of others that played their part in blessing us too —
It was good to reflect on the American History of YOU.

This was the celebration of the Smithsonian African American History and Culture Museum in DC.
I am grateful from the bottom of my heart for a place that will house the history of WE.

I’ll drop by the museum often to reflect on and gaze upon
those fragments of time that I do call my own.

The Smithsonian is a fine home and so the party went off without a hitch,

Fading-to-black the TV because the last two hours satisfied an Historical itch.

THANK YOU
