It’s one of my favorite things to do.
Every time I talk to him I learn a thing or two.

Yesterday when we talked – he casually mentioned ‘news a la thick,’
he said he was on the set of a film regarding a MARVEL comic.

‘Tis sweet info that did split my wig and so I had to share it with you.
Schmoozing with Fab5Freddy has yielded me this #411cool:

FFF Vegas2014 Fall

Fred “Fab5Freddy” Brathwaite – Vegas 2014

A trip to New York is not ever complete without a trip to visit my awesome mentor and dear friend Fred “Fab5Freddy” Brathwaite, so that’s exactly what I did.

Fab is a very busy man, so let me express as much as possible how honored I was to get “any of his time” let alone time at the breakfast and dinner table with him. For breakfast we dined on a read by Talib Kweli with a side of bacon, pancakes and a fantastic cup of jo, (that he prepared for us). Good stuff. The literal cuisine was captivating and rivet-connecting. The article was titled, “Nigga? Please.” It was quite sufficient.

An evening meal of Ecuadorian rice caught us discussing Steve Stout‘s: The Tanning Of America. My mentor is a museum of knowledge and always has an interesting piece on hand. No boring conversation there. Knowledge rules the world, and I prefer to be a part of the ruling force, so I jotted down a reminder to get ahold of TTOA – all four hours of it.

Yes, I made tons of notes during our time together, but getting more familiar with The Tanning of America was at the top of my list. It was broadcast live in February of this year, and I don’t know how, but somehow I must have missed it. Thanks to VH1, I’m all caught up and am able to lay it out today, for your review.

Why would you want to review the broadcast too? Well, for one, this is the perfect time to watch it. It won’t clear up anything that’s going on in the world today as it pertains to race relations, Mike Brown or Travon Martin. No. But what it will do is hip you, educate you to the culture of your other neighbor. If nothing else, it opens up an interesting discussion. America needs so many more discussions.

Let’s see what all of the melanin is about in The Tanning of America:

Fab 5 Freddy sits on the panel with an awesome lineup of #GoodHeads hosted by Gail King: Steve Stout, Nas, Al Sharpton, Billy Corben and Daymond John

The full broadcast ran 4-days, for one hour each day. Click HERE to taste the knowledge.

Unity is in the Music.
If it’ll work, then sure! Let’s use it.

There’s more connecting us, than what keeps us apart.
The Tanning of America’s discussion is timely and smart.

Schmoozing with Fab5Freddy always leaves my lobes on wrinkle,

And if knowledge was bladder heavy — every 5 minutes I’d have to tinkle.

Wood grain, black leather, and chrome — is standard inside of his mercedes ride. However it is the music and conversation that brands the moment:

Riding shot gun with Fab 5 Freddy down 5th Avenue and across town…
Reminds me that this brother gets around more than “BROWN“.

He plays the dopest joints and his conversation is always tight.
I’m usually keeping my composure while thinking, “this is the life”!

His a.m. route sounds like jazz and his evening route sounds like a party.
All that is missing is a venue, a top shelf bar and few pining shorties.
The ladies do love FabOooo Lordy.

Me too.
Not many can pull off all that he’s known to do.

Just yesterday as I was on my way, sashaying and being productively steady
I received an informative text from the international and domestically cool: Fab 5 Freddy.

Beyond saying,”Yo Qui! What’s up?,” and spitting a few more verses that made me think
he split my wig with info of his current gig when he shot me this WJLA link:

Key BLACK HISTORY Subjects: VIRGO

ahh-at-last.png When it comes to the depths of noir intellect, Hast thou met a Virgo?‘ Astrologically, they are the 6th sign of the zodiac. The only sign that resembles self sufficiency, (in my opinion). You have seen her, haven’t you?

She’s packing wheat and how she makes bread – be it in the oven or the bank – she is by default, equipped with the resources and capacity to do so. Therefore in the spirit of refined resourcefulness I’d like to showcase two “bread makers” that are and have been instrumental in my professional and personal life. They are teaching me to fish and make bread. Maybe they can help you out too:

Tricia & Jacob Miles @ U.S. China Film .jpg

JACOB R. MILES.  An executive with engineering, operations, sales experience in the media, entertainment and automotive industries. Experienced with start ups, development stage, emerging growth and Fortune 500 companies. His KEY focuses lie on improving and leveraging the synergies within organizations to achieve operational excellence and growth. Jake deals in technology, operations (domestic & international), digital media, internet sales, licensing, intellectual property development. He’s a great asset in assignments for business owners, officers & directors, investment bankers, investors looking to grow, restructure, reignite portfolio companies.

Always about his research, Jake is also notably a business analyst, New Media integrator, consultant and speaker on diversity, entrepreneurship models, technology & strategy with solutions that power growth. Jack up your profits with Jake,” is my motto for him — ask George Lucas.

This was my beginning. How awesome is that? The #BlackHistory that shaped me…

As tough of an act as Virgoan Jake is, fate introduced me to:

fab5freddy-jan-2016-usherFREDRICK “Fab 5 Freddy” BRATHWAITE.  In the late 1970s, Freddy became a member of the Brooklyn-based graffiti group The Fabulous 5, known for painting the entire side of New York subway cars. Along with other Fabulous 5 member Lee Quiñones, under his direction they began to shift from street graffiti to transition into the art world and in 1979 they both exhibited in a prestigious gallery in Rome Italy, Galleria LaMedusa. In 1980, he painted a subway train with cartoon style depictions of giant Campbell’s Soup cans,[1] after Andy Warhol. He was the bridge between the New York uptown graffiti and early rap scene and the downtown art and punk music scenes. “I was bringing the whole music, hip-hop, art, break dancing and urban cultural thing to the downtown table,” he said.

At the end of 1980, Glenn O’Brien cast Freddy, along with fellow Lower East Side graffiti writer Lee Quiñones, in the film New York Beat (later released as Downtown 81). That film showcased artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in his Lower Manhattan environment and the culture that surrounded it. Shortly after, Freddy began production along with filmmaker Charlie Ahearn on his film Wild Style (1982), which showcased artist Lee Quiñones in the Uptown, Manhattan environment of the Bronx and the music that surrounded it.  Fab continues to inject dopeness into the art and film industry to date. Peep his wikipedia, yo!  He is HIP HOP and he DON’T STOP.

decorative-line-divider1

I met Jake in 2004 after writing my first film script.
Film officials ‘came for me’ — ’twas massive business; it was a hit!

Head spinning and ‘financial prospect’ grinning – I was head over heels
that’s  when Jacob came in to separate fiction from reel.

He authenticated the feel, we discussed the depths of the game & being more fiscal.
He advised me to continue to write, get a website and crank out more scripts for maximum residuals.

So I submitted to creativity and literally did –
then my writes via an online site found Fab in 2006.
FANTASTIC!

He challenged my mind and emboldened my cool
and recommended of me a little more school.

Knowledge is the golden rule – my talents only opened the door.
Fab5Freddy has been an instrumental player in my bad-arse knowledgeable scores!

Research and application always yield me soar. The strength of; I love the feel.
Being mentored by Fab I gave full production ‘a dap’- and acquired the capacity to reel.

With the website, the schooling and equipment in place,
My future of reel capacity has a productive dimensional face.

And I’m off to the races, my future is bright as I fully embrace life’s mystery.
The guides that said “GO!” were both VIRGO’s and awesome contributors to BLACK HISTORY.

When you are planning your life, plan to be surrounded not by nay sayers.
I’m Qui
and Black History is KEY – I’m blessed to be surrounded by VIRGO’an Players.

ART and The ARTIST

In Communication, Griot, Networking, Self Improvement on June 8, 2015 at 6:09 am

QE-fab5-andy-warhol

Once upon a time, and every decade or so
there’s a huge artistic shift and the revolutions are like whoa.

The movements are born out of a need to be heard, for civility and change.
Passion paints the chains that bulges ‘the mans’ veins and leaves a legacy chalk  full of names.

Unfortunately (for most) the artist is usually “just another guy”
struggling to get noticed until the day that he dies.

Post mortem, once blind curators selfishly take up the cause
to market his limited work in high priced gallery halls.

With wine and cheese the auctions are for those who ball.
God bless the artist and the reason for his [mortality] fall.
Aren’t his successes for his DNA tresses?’ — No, no. It’s all for y’all.

The patience required for the artists to endure could physically hurt,
but when  you’re living out your purpose, it’s a pleasure and no day at work.

The reality of rent, utilities and food often suggests creativity stay at bay and at home.
Still family is key to the artists survival. Family and friends are the artists patron.

The artists road is at all not easy, it is full of turmoil and uphill treading.
The needle sews beautifully when in motion, but is a beast at it’s the threading.

Anything worth having, may pain you just a little bit.
No doubt artists blow up and burn fast, but then some are a long time hit.

Longevity is key and Andy Warhol is still banging.
For a fella who died in 1987, his relativity is still hanging.

It’s a good thang that our history has embraced his artistic take.
It’s also pretty cool info that Warhol, mentored Brathwaite.

A living legend, Fab 5 Freddy was pretty wet behind the ears in the ’80’s
still he hails a history for introducing rap to global homeboys and ladies.

MTV was the horse that he rode in on with the his hip hop news
and that subway train is a historical dimension of his artistic view.

Yes! Before Fab5 baptized and delivered YO! MTV Raps
He was known as a graffiti artists, yielding the city ‘art dap.’

He spray painted a subway car, cement walls, and has gone on to tag many historical  scenes.
His taste in art and business smarts is how he’s maintained his legendary status at  our hip hop seams.

The artist always has big dreams. He paints his dreams with a certain tool.
Dantrel Boone is drawing life…  reflecting detail — with or without school.
cousin-dinky-dantrel-boone

His talents are a natural birth right, his wisdom is deep and has been taught.
The productions that he produces are telling and surely art collector sought.

D1 D2 D3
–click on the picture to enlarge it–

Lucky you, his work can be bought; caveat, he is merely dawning his stride.
The stories he draws gives personal pause and reason to Thank God for eyesight.

Wether he’s penciling a likeness of you, someone you love or that thing you hold dear.
You know heaven is real when a drawing invokes you to dimensionally hear.

Dantrel paints history, moments in movements and the unspoken sublime.
Dantrel communicates with one drawing after another, changing hearts and minds.

It’s his purpose and he’s living it out like the previous legends.
I pray he stay focused , gift submerged and reaps a long endin.’

Perhaps he’ll go on to make a lot of money that will surely need spendin’.
I don’t know, but Dantrel’s talent is swell and he has all the makings of a future legend.

Me? I’m all about the words; I like to write, direct, film, and shoot.
I’m Qui
Loving life; to produce is my right and doing so is a daily hoot!

I love what I do and I’m appreciative for you.
I, too, am the artist. Thanks for rolling through.
I’m most productive when I’m vibing you.
Ooo!

About The 80’s

In Communication, Griot, Music, Self Improvement, TV Shows on August 4, 2014 at 7:42 am

80s MusicI lived through them. I remember the period like it was yesterday,
the span was 1980-1981 and I was in the 5th grade.

When Ronald Reagan was president and Richard Pryor was still LIVE,
when going to a Drive-In Movie Theater was still a cool weekend vibe.

Yes, I remember a lot ABOUT The 80’s and I remember it well.
When “Girls just want to have fun’ was an airwaves spell.
When MTV’s music was limit-free and the channel: revolutionary,
it’s breakout beginning lead us to Rap being introduced by Fab 5 Freddy.

I do remember – yes! I was there.
We rocked jerry curls and curly perms – I loved big hair;
it was a time when cigarettes lawfully burned amidst the indoors air.

It wasn’t fair, but the 50’s made it seem cool,
to request a ‘no smoking’ section then – was to be ‘acting a fool.’

Comedian Andrew Dice Clay would do it to the max,
and I was hospitalized for wheezing and asthma attacks.

Things have changed since I was a grade school adolescent lady,
I can’t help but break a smile when I think ABOUT The 80’s.

There was Boy George, Lisa-Lisa and Cult Jam and Michael Jackson hype.
There was Salt n Pepper, Big Daddy Cane and my main girl MC LYTE.

I remember when a prerequisite for rapping was a unique vocabulary.
I was queen of words for all to have heard – things I loved ABOUT The 80’s.

Girls were popping and boys were girl-crazy.
Music was romantic and we dreamt of making babies.

Now that’s the part, I’m glad is gone – the music industry was crazy.
Sex stayed on our mind. Those darn romantic 1980’s.

YO! MTV Raps hit the scene in the 80’s and knocked a hole in the rock video game.
I was impressed with the Rap address, but the loss of rock and roll – I felt, was lame.

Yes I was a stone cold rocker. I liked it all. If it rebelled, I rocked.
But when MTV took on rap – it wound up rocks TV clock.

There used to be one commercial that would start my school morning beat,
where various music stars would decry: “I want my MTV”.

.
There was nothing like head banging music – MTV would call out to my eyelids.
Rock and Roll would wake me up – no coffee cup… I had the coolest of parents.

Salt n’ Pepa formed my high school years and of course I became a rapper.
My words so clean; intellect mean– screw fashion, my mind was dapper.

Dapper is a word yielded to men that are high end in their fashion style.
My mind crossed barriers so clean and so tough, even they admired my wields.
Oooo child.

It was all About The 80’s. I graduated from high school in 1989.
Bold in taste a literary in your face, I entered society and all was fine.

College followed immediately after, but not before I fell in love – yo!
For in 1990 cupid yielded my honey deep in love with my HS beau,
and so…

WhenI think About The 80’s. The Thriller of good music comes to mind,
fonder days that have passed away, still bear a brand new shine.

No matter where I am in life, or what I’m doing on my grind,
I’m Qui
and when I think About The 80’s nothing but good comes to mind.

If you missed the 80’s because you weren’t born, feel free to fashion the day.
Life is meant to be purposeful, sure, after a good run of love and play.

Speaking of re-living the 80’s, let it not involve politics.
While the music and cable shows were amazing – that other stuff was lame and sick.

Let’s get back to the days of surplus!
Let’s get back to EXPRESSING ART and free hugs.
You can start with big hair but most importantly let’s start with showing more love.
Me first:
XOXO

Do you feel that?

In Communication, Griot, Music, Networking, News, Politics, Sports, TV Shows on February 2, 2014 at 5:30 am

Love is in the air
Love is in The Air but Chris Christie is getting none
it seems his ‘cone placing’ sarcasm – is no longer fun.

David Wildstein was informed he’d have to pay for this own defense
per the port authority decision makers because it only makes sense

that if he isn’t going to take the fall of this ax – that is quite heavy,
then new jeopardy opens up for laying blame on Bridgett Kelly.

Bridgett Kelly is the lady who sent the infamous text
to David Wildstein regarding ‘the traffic jam’ vex.

Wildstein worked for the port authority and Ms. Kelly worked next to CC.
David Samson is (one of) CC’s close advisors – he runs the port authority.

I wonder if David Samson had a vote in the decisive call,
that led to Wildsteins legal support stall?

During committee hearings, Wildstein’s attorney was on his council duty
when he asked the questioning counsel to yield Wildstein immunity.

In light of all of this Ms. Bridget Kelly has gained a clue;
she’s ditched Christie’s lawyer-friend, and hired her own attorney too.

Kelly had been sitting quiet, giving the media no time at all
She was the loyal team member, who dropped, then held the ball.

Chris Christie dumped-on her and said Kelly was a lone rogue player.
Still she never once said a word; she held down her supportive layer.

But after seeing the story fall apart in the news and unravel at the seams,
Bridget Kelly figured she’d better strap in and look out for “i” instead of “team.”

Suddenly I’m hearing John Paul Young [1978] singing:

Love is in the air
every time I turn around…

Do you feel that? Surely you can sense the signs of peril and danger.
Where are the wise men (in this story) and where is the manger?

Where is the light that will lead CC’s administration out of this?
Is that love in the air or a skunk smell amidst?
You must admit it has a funky kind-of twist…

They say, ‘in love’ that ‘all is fair,
and I’m just wondering if you smell that funk in the air?

I love you all, it’s a new week and all is fair on this new day,
I’m Qui
quoting Fab5Freddy, “Life is a game that must be played.”

Speaking of ‘play’ — the NFL will have its say,
Today is February 2nd – SUPER BOWL Sunday!!!
