She’s packing wheat and how she makes bread – be it in the oven or the bank – she is by default, equipped with the resources and capacity to do so. Therefore in the spirit of refined resourcefulness I’d like to showcase two “bread makers” that are and have been instrumental in my professional and personal life. They are teaching me to fish and make bread. Maybe they can help you out too:

Tricia & Jacob Miles @ U.S. China Film .jpg

JACOB R. MILES.  An executive with engineering, operations, sales experience in the media, entertainment and automotive industries. Experienced with start ups, development stage, emerging growth and Fortune 500 companies. His KEY focuses lie on improving and leveraging the synergies within organizations to achieve operational excellence and growth. Jake deals in technology, operations (domestic & international), digital media, internet sales, licensing, intellectual property development. He’s a great asset in assignments for business owners, officers & directors, investment bankers, investors looking to grow, restructure, reignite portfolio companies.

Always about his research, Jake is also notably a business analyst, New Media integrator, consultant and speaker on diversity, entrepreneurship models, technology & strategy with solutions that power growth. Jack up your profits with Jake,” is my motto for him — ask George Lucas.

This was my beginning. How awesome is that? The #BlackHistory that shaped me…

As tough of an act as Virgoan Jake is, fate introduced me to:

fab5freddy-jan-2016-usherFREDRICK “Fab 5 Freddy” BRATHWAITE.  In the late 1970s, Freddy became a member of the Brooklyn-based graffiti group The Fabulous 5, known for painting the entire side of New York subway cars. Along with other Fabulous 5 member Lee Quiñones, under his direction they began to shift from street graffiti to transition into the art world and in 1979 they both exhibited in a prestigious gallery in Rome Italy, Galleria LaMedusa. In 1980, he painted a subway train with cartoon style depictions of giant Campbell’s Soup cans,[1] after Andy Warhol. He was the bridge between the New York uptown graffiti and early rap scene and the downtown art and punk music scenes. “I was bringing the whole music, hip-hop, art, break dancing and urban cultural thing to the downtown table,” he said.

At the end of 1980, Glenn O’Brien cast Freddy, along with fellow Lower East Side graffiti writer Lee Quiñones, in the film New York Beat (later released as Downtown 81). That film showcased artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in his Lower Manhattan environment and the culture that surrounded it. Shortly after, Freddy began production along with filmmaker Charlie Ahearn on his film Wild Style (1982), which showcased artist Lee Quiñones in the Uptown, Manhattan environment of the Bronx and the music that surrounded it.  Fab continues to inject dopeness into the art and film industry to date. Peep his wikipedia, yo!  He is HIP HOP and he DON’T STOP.

I met Jake in 2004 after writing my first film script.
Film officials ‘came for me’ — ’twas massive business; it was a hit!

Head spinning and ‘financial prospect’ grinning – I was head over heels
that’s  when Jacob came in to separate fiction from reel.

He authenticated the feel, we discussed the depths of the game & being more fiscal.
He advised me to continue to write, get a website and crank out more scripts for maximum residuals.

So I submitted to creativity and literally did –
then my writes via an online site found Fab in 2006.
FANTASTIC!

He challenged my mind and emboldened my cool
and recommended of me a little more school.

Knowledge is the golden rule – my talents only opened the door.
Fab5Freddy has been an instrumental player in my bad-arse knowledgeable scores!

Research and application always yield me soar. The strength of; I love the feel.
Being mentored by Fab I gave full production ‘a dap’- and acquired the capacity to reel.

With the website, the schooling and equipment in place,
My future of reel capacity has a productive dimensional face.

And I’m off to the races, my future is bright as I fully embrace life’s mystery.
The guides that said “GO!” were both VIRGO’s and awesome contributors to BLACK HISTORY.

ART and The ARTIST

In Communication, Griot, Networking, Self Improvement on June 8, 2015 at 6:09 am

QE-fab5-andy-warhol

Once upon a time, and every decade or so
there’s a huge artistic shift and the revolutions are like whoa.

The movements are born out of a need to be heard, for civility and change.
Passion paints the chains that bulges ‘the mans’ veins and leaves a legacy chalk  full of names.

Unfortunately (for most) the artist is usually “just another guy”
struggling to get noticed until the day that he dies.

Post mortem, once blind curators selfishly take up the cause
to market his limited work in high priced gallery halls.

With wine and cheese the auctions are for those who ball.
God bless the artist and the reason for his [mortality] fall.
Aren’t his successes for his DNA tresses?’ — No, no. It’s all for y’all.

The patience required for the artists to endure could physically hurt,
but when  you’re living out your purpose, it’s a pleasure and no day at work.

The reality of rent, utilities and food often suggests creativity stay at bay and at home.
Still family is key to the artists survival. Family and friends are the artists patron.

The artists road is at all not easy, it is full of turmoil and uphill treading.
The needle sews beautifully when in motion, but is a beast at it’s the threading.

Anything worth having, may pain you just a little bit.
No doubt artists blow up and burn fast, but then some are a long time hit.

Longevity is key and Andy Warhol is still banging.
For a fella who died in 1987, his relativity is still hanging.

It’s a good thang that our history has embraced his artistic take.
It’s also pretty cool info that Warhol, mentored Brathwaite.

A living legend, Fab 5 Freddy was pretty wet behind the ears in the ’80’s
still he hails a history for introducing rap to global homeboys and ladies.

MTV was the horse that he rode in on with the his hip hop news
and that subway train is a historical dimension of his artistic view.

Yes! Before Fab5 baptized and delivered YO! MTV Raps
He was known as a graffiti artists, yielding the city ‘art dap.’

He spray painted a subway car, cement walls, and has gone on to tag many historical  scenes.
His taste in art and business smarts is how he’s maintained his legendary status at  our hip hop seams.

The artist always has big dreams. He paints his dreams with a certain tool.
Dantrel Boone is drawing life…  reflecting detail — with or without school.

His talents are a natural birth right, his wisdom is deep and has been taught.
The productions that he produces are telling and surely art collector sought.

Lucky you, his work can be bought; caveat, he is merely dawning his stride.
The stories he draws gives personal pause and reason to Thank God for eyesight.

Wether he’s penciling a likeness of you, someone you love or that thing you hold dear.
You know heaven is real when a drawing invokes you to dimensionally hear.

Dantrel paints history, moments in movements and the unspoken sublime.
Dantrel communicates with one drawing after another, changing hearts and minds.

It’s his purpose and he’s living it out like the previous legends.
I pray he stay focused , gift submerged and reaps a long endin.’

Perhaps he’ll go on to make a lot of money that will surely need spendin’.
I don’t know, but Dantrel’s talent is swell and he has all the makings of a future legend.

Me? I’m all about the words; I like to write, direct, film, and shoot.
I’m Qui
Loving life; to produce is my right and doing so is a daily hoot!

I love what I do and I’m appreciative for you.
I, too, am the artist. Thanks for rolling through.
I’m most productive when I’m vibing you.

Schmoozing with Fab5

FFF Vegas2014 Fall

Fred “Fab5Freddy” Brathwaite – Vegas 2014

A trip to New York is not ever complete without a trip to visit my awesome mentor and dear friend Fred “Fab5Freddy” Brathwaite, so that’s exactly what I did.

Fab is a very busy man, so let me express as much as possible how honored I was to get “any of his time” let alone time at the breakfast and dinner table with him. For breakfast we dined on a read by Talib Kweli with a side of bacon, pancakes and a fantastic cup of jo, (that he prepared for us). Good stuff. The literal cuisine was captivating and rivet-connecting. The article was titled, “Nigga? Please.” It was quite sufficient.

An evening meal of Ecuadorian rice caught us discussing Steve Stout‘s: The Tanning Of America. My mentor is a museum of knowledge and always has an interesting piece on hand. No boring conversation there. Knowledge rules the world, and I prefer to be a part of the ruling force, so I jotted down a reminder to get ahold of TTOA – all four hours of it.

Yes, I made tons of notes during our time together, but getting more familiar with The Tanning of America was at the top of my list. It was broadcast live in February of this year, and I don’t know how, but somehow I must have missed it. Thanks to VH1, I’m all caught up and am able to lay it out today, for your review.

Why would you want to review the broadcast too? Well, for one, this is the perfect time to watch it. It won’t clear up anything that’s going on in the world today as it pertains to race relations, Mike Brown or Travon Martin. No. But what it will do is hip you, educate you to the culture of your other neighbor. If nothing else, it opens up an interesting discussion. America needs so many more discussions.

Let’s see what all of the melanin is about in The Tanning of America:

Fab 5 Freddy sits on the panel with an awesome lineup of #GoodHeads hosted by Gail King: Steve Stout, Nas, Al Sharpton, Billy Corben and Daymond John

The full broadcast ran 4-days, for one hour each day. Click HERE to taste the knowledge.

Unity is in the Music.
If it’ll work, then sure! Let’s use it.

There’s more connecting us, than what keeps us apart.
The Tanning of America’s discussion is timely and smart.

Schmoozing with Fab5Freddy always leaves my lobes on wrinkle,

And if knowledge was bladder heavy — every 5 minutes I’d have to tinkle.

Lets TALK About…

In Communication, Griot, Movies, Networking, News, Self Improvement, TV Shows on November 3, 2013 at 6:05 pm

Do you know how to get to The BLUE WAY?

1230617_10200549979451661_67301655_o

Not only have I personally witnessed their broadcasting entertainment but I have had the pleasure of being a guest on the show and what a good time that was.

The hosts Duane Bluestein and Shelley Marie are a raw, funny and all-out entertaining pair. You could take my word for it, or you could watch the show: Peep the YouTube Channel.

I credit my being booked on the show to Ita – a genius Dr. of  special effects and editing whose also the mastermind behind VIEW FROM ABOVE Entertainment and the 1-man production crew (film and editing) behind The Blue Way Talk Show. I actually met Ita at GangPlank – and we were introduced by the awesome Derek Neighbors.

Do you remember that old film that Will Smith starred in called, “Six Degrees of Separation?” Well that’s how this town lives and thrives. I met Debbie Rubenstruck (Dir. of the Youth Advisory Council) through my 16-year old daughter. Then Debbie invited me  to serve on this seasons ‘entrance panel.’ There I met Debbie’s dear friend Rich Frazier. A couple of days later while sipping a cup a joe with Rich, Derek’s name came up, GangPlank, Ita and ultimately The Blue Way Talk Show.

You see how that happened?  That’s 7 hook-ups in line with six degrees of separation that all started with my 16-year old daughter…and life is good.

Correction, life is great! This weekend will find me mingling with some of Phoenix’s best at the International Alliance of Prevention of Aids. I’m very excited about the upcoming event. I’m very blessed to have been invited. God only knows who I’ll meet and connect with there and again, I’ll have Debbie to thank for it, because she’s the one who invited me. Debbie is queen of fundraising around here. If you’re looking to raise some serious cash for a great cause — she’s your girl.

And so fate put me on the path to The Blue Way Talk Show, that actually broadcasts from inside of GangPlank. I sat down with the hosts and we touched on what QUI FILMS has up for the future. It was the perfect opportunity to drop a dime on the new teen film production company that we are in the process of establishing appropriately called: Perceptual. We also touched on how I got started in the film industry and that inquiry led to us talking about my mentor and dear friend Fab 5 Freddy, (whose wisdom & artistic deeds have been priceless to me on my journey). And just like that we started to add on more degrees of separation — because you can’t talk about Fab 5 Freddy without talking about Debbie “Blondie” Harry or Andy Warhol. Blondie and Andy were very instrumental in setting Fab 5 on his current path of success. See — I told you, life is great!

So which way are you going? Where’s your career path taking you? Well if it ever brings you through Phoenix, AZ, then you’ve got to get booked on The Blue Way Talk Show and tell us all about it. Don’t sleep on Phoenix, in particular Chandler. It’s a young city,  it’s got great plans & ideas and I can’t wait to contribute to its youthful growth.

divider blk_south

Stay tuned for more out of this town – they’ve got a very easy and big hearted flow;
we’ve got professionals on the ground level building up a Teen Production Co.

The name of the group is PERCEPTUAL and you can find more information here.
Auditions started last Friday and sparked us with good reason to cheer.

There’ll only be so many positions available and this weekend we filled quite a few.
Chandler will birth tomorrows filmmakers of creativity, skills and reel truths.

The Blue Way Talk Show gave me the mic and a platform to voice what’s to come,
I’m Qui
Grateful for all that’s encompassed in GangPlank – Success looks a lot like fun.

Drop in if you have not,
The future is looking hot!

Embracing 9/11

In Communication, Griot, Music, Networking, News, Self Improvement on September 11, 2012 at 10:32 am

The OTHER SIDE of The Game

9/11 Birthday Babies

It has nothing to do with Erykah Badu’s rendition [The Other side of The Game], but more as it refers to the 24-hour display that September 11th reflects. Sure some exited on 9/11, but many were also born on this date. The astrological calendar calls them VIRGOs.

This is the month of the Virgo. Do you know any? They are by far some mystique folk. Their astrology icon is a lady packing wheat. Most astrology icons are animals, besides the duplicitous Gemini, but that’s another story for another month. The Virgo’s are friendly and out going to an extent. My sister is married to a Virgo whose birthday happens to be today: HAPPY BIRTHDAY Brother-in-Law. Their union is among the rare. I am friends to and related to quite a few Virgo’s that contently roll solo – easy. So easy, I couldn’t imagine them getting married and succumbing to the rules that clearly state ‘the world does not solely revolve around you.’ I think bro-in-law finds his shoe to be a bit snug, but by outward appearances, you’d never know — because he’s a Virgo.

Virgo’s are smart. Virgo’s are sexy. Virgo’s are great friends. Virgo’s are like that big square piece that doesn’t quite fit into the circle shaped slot that is for regular purposes. They are of a custom design.

Aug 23 – Sept 23

Virgo’s are awesome parents and great friends. They are also good at making something out of nothing and that something will likely become a big awesome deal to others who observe it. Like in the case of the sexy bachelor Fab 5 Freddy. He is all that and a dozen of 30 x 30 canvases, but not quite for general purposes. I’ve spent quite a few 1-on-1 days with the Legend and he is not “normal”. He is fascinating, exciting, creative, intelligent, witty, but not, silly, mundane, cool’less, or regular. Even in his bathrobe, he’s not regular. His mind is always in progressive thought and his actions are swift, (often leaving others behind). Not because Virgo doesn’t care for them, but because opportunity is at hand – at such time he realizes he can do more good going forward, than staying behind to explain his next step. The Virgo has foresight and more often than not, he has insight. It takes a special mate to pair up with a Virgo and keep a balanced measure.

God bless Jay-Z, because Beyonce is surely a Virgo.
And heaven knows how he manages the day to day flow.

Michael Jackson is a Virgo, as is Charlie Sheen.
We’ve watched them both through the televised screen.

They are not “normal” their shape does not fit
within lifes general slots – thus they are a hit!

They are that virginic icon packing a-bundle-of wheat.
They can be terribly rough – then unbelievably sweet.

Though without them, life would lack an exciting treat,
I’m Qui
And for the Virgo — I remain open minded & sweet.

The world would be incomplete
without the wheat packing V.
)))Happy Birthday((( to thee.

We’ll never forget

A young memory. We’ll never forget.

I remember the day very well. My now 21 year old and 15 year old were both in elementary school. We were getting ready to drop them off when we heard about the airplane hijackings. Once we reached the school and walked inside to deliver them to their classes, we heard an overhead announcement say that one of the planes had crashed into a high rise in NY and with my youngest daughters hand in mine , I fell on my knees where I stood, (in the schools foyer/entrance).

You know 911’s story. I know the wound is still fresh.
Somehow it hasn’t vapored off – not even with Osama’s death.

I still think of those children and nothing I can say will bring them back.

In the Mercedes with Fab

Wood grain, black leather, and chrome — is standard inside of his mercedes ride. However it is the music and conversation that brands the moment:

Riding shot gun with Fab 5 Freddy down 5th Avenue and across town…
Reminds me that this brother gets around more than “BROWN“.

He plays the dopest joints and his conversation is always tight.
I’m usually keeping my composure while thinking, “this is the life”!

His a.m. route sounds like jazz and his evening route sounds like a party.
All that is missing is a venue, a top shelf bar and few pining shorties.
The ladies do love FabOooo Lordy.

Me too.
Not many can pull off all that he’s known to do.

Happy Birthday Fab5Freddy

I was happy to bed and happy to rise;
I was happy to breathe and open my eyes
to see another day not promised to me;
To revel in life and enjoy her mystery;
To stop and smell the roses and hammer out a blog.
I’m happy right now —> I’m a communication hog.

No ordinary hump is applicable to this date –
watermarked by the birth of Frederick Brathwaite.
Sheer legacy is in tact and his ART is crystal steady;

you can put it in your rap.

I’m happy today because friendship is golden.
I’m a lover of gold, so to friends I’m beholden. lol!
Not a lover of jewelry or much for material things,
but I do love Mr. Brathwaite from his ART to his HIP HOP seams.

‘Ya know what I mean?
He wears intellect like oil sheen.
It’s all in his head and I like watching.
I’m known for LISTENING when F5F is talking.

Historical Future ART Mash

Merging TIME into ART

Yep! That’s the best I can do to with the headline of this article: “Historical Future ART Mash”. For these are the words that roll off of my lips when I think of Fab 5 Freddy and his works.

Aside from being my mentor on a myriad of subjects, Fab5Freddy is a living legend documented in hundreds of art gallery databases including The Library of Congress. How proud am I of his accomplishments to our American, Pop, Hip Hop, and intellectual culture? 😀

Have you ever seen this man out of character or out-of-order? If you said “NO” – some would argue with you on that — and their immediate case in point would be Fab’s recent glitzy exhibition that appears to glorify violence (boxing) and sex (strippers on poles), [Crystal Punch Exhibition @ The Cosmopolitan – Las Vegas]. However, it is clear that those who would make such an argument do not live in the real world. For sex, violence, water and love is what this country runs on. So please don’t insult my intelligence.😉

ART NET Magazine also ran into Fab5 (at some point) during the week,
and gave literal props to the legends work in their piece on : “ART in The Street”.

Though one of my favorite pieces – written this time last week
was the one mentioning F5F’s expansive legacy – on HYPEBEAST.

You can catch Fab’s thoughts on “ART in the Streets” via youtube or vimeo.
Of course if you’re into “the audio thing” – peep KCRW & I AM RADIO.

If you’re wondering what the future will look like? Take a good look at today.
