The Layered Look

A few yummy things we think are just great!

The Doberge cake is six layers of moist butter cake sandwiched between made-from-scratch chocolate and lemon custards and topped with buttercream, fondant and New Orleans harm. Of course, eating it on Fat Tuesday– but laissez les bons temps rouler! (Eight-inch cake, originally $45.50, now 20 percent off with code OPRAH; gambinos.com)

“Please don’t eat the daisies!” does not apply here! Baked in small batches, these sugar cookies are both soft and crunchy, laced with almond extract, coated with cream cheese frosting and impossibly delectable with a cup of tea. Batter Up with A Small Miracle

waffleshot-ziavalentina.jpgAny chance that you have a shot of espresso or vodka that needs a tasty capacity holder? This next creation is A Small Miracle. Fact: Food just tastes better when it’s tiny, which is hwy we fell hard for these mini waffle cups.  Roughly the size of a shot glass and completely edible with a surprise filling at the bottom — they’re prefect vessel for espresso or ice cream and an adorable finishing touch for a dinner party. Just yesterday as I was on my way, sashaying and being productively steady
I received an informative text from the international and domestically cool: Fab 5 Freddy.

Beyond saying,”Yo Qui! What’s up?,” and spitting a few more verses that made me think
he split my wig with info of his current gig when he shot me this WJLA link:

Two very different, yet influential international icons
collaborating in art of hip and historic cultural sums.

Mmm and yum. Y’all know how I feel about adding good and solid content.
It seems that their art and cultural collab has alas, been SMITHSONIAN sent.

The WILDSTYLE EXHIBITION is on display in Washington, DC as I speak.
The a fore interview was pretty telling as well, click PLAY and take a peek.

ART and The ARTIST

In Communication, Griot, Networking, Self Improvement on June 8, 2015 at 6:09 am

QE-fab5-andy-warhol

Once upon a time, and every decade or so
there’s a huge artistic shift and the revolutions are like whoa.

The movements are born out of a need to be heard, for civility and change.
Passion paints the chains that bulges ‘the mans’ veins and leaves a legacy chalk  full of names.

Unfortunately (for most) the artist is usually “just another guy”
struggling to get noticed until the day that he dies.

Post mortem, once blind curators selfishly take up the cause
to market his limited work in high priced gallery halls.

With wine and cheese the auctions are for those who ball.
God bless the artist and the reason for his [mortality] fall.
Aren’t his successes for his DNA tresses?’ — No, no. It’s all for y’all.

The patience required for the artists to endure could physically hurt,
but when  you’re living out your purpose, it’s a pleasure and no day at work.

The reality of rent, utilities and food often suggests creativity stay at bay and at home.
Still family is key to the artists survival. Family and friends are the artists patron.

The artists road is at all not easy, it is full of turmoil and uphill treading.
The needle sews beautifully when in motion, but is a beast at it’s the threading.

Anything worth having, may pain you just a little bit.
No doubt artists blow up and burn fast, but then some are a long time hit.

Longevity is key and Andy Warhol is still banging.
For a fella who died in 1987, his relativity is still hanging.

It’s a good thang that our history has embraced his artistic take.
It’s also pretty cool info that Warhol, mentored Brathwaite.

A living legend, Fab 5 Freddy was pretty wet behind the ears in the ’80’s
still he hails a history for introducing rap to global homeboys and ladies.

MTV was the horse that he rode in on with the his hip hop news
and that subway train is a historical dimension of his artistic view.

Yes! Before Fab5 baptized and delivered YO! MTV Raps
He was known as a graffiti artists, yielding the city ‘art dap.’

He spray painted a subway car, cement walls, and has gone on to tag many historical  scenes.
His taste in art and business smarts is how he’s maintained his legendary status at  our hip hop seams.

The artist always has big dreams. He paints his dreams with a certain tool.
Dantrel Boone is drawing life…  reflecting detail — with or without school.
cousin-dinky-dantrel-boone

His talents are a natural birth right, his wisdom is deep and has been taught.
The productions that he produces are telling and surely art collector sought.

–click on the picture to enlarge it–

Lucky you, his work can be bought; caveat, he is merely dawning his stride.
The stories he draws gives personal pause and reason to Thank God for eyesight.

Wether he’s penciling a likeness of you, someone you love or that thing you hold dear.
You know heaven is real when a drawing invokes you to dimensionally hear.

Dantrel paints history, moments in movements and the unspoken sublime.
Dantrel communicates with one drawing after another, changing hearts and minds.

It’s his purpose and he’s living it out like the previous legends.
I pray he stay focused , gift submerged and reaps a long endin.’

Perhaps he’ll go on to make a lot of money that will surely need spendin’.
I don’t know, but Dantrel’s talent is swell and he has all the makings of a future legend.

Me? I’m all about the words; I like to write, direct, film, and shoot.
I’m Qui
Loving life; to produce is my right and doing so is a daily hoot!

I love what I do and I’m appreciative for you.
I, too, am the artist. Thanks for rolling through.
I’m most productive when I’m vibing you.
Ooo!

My neighborhood is RICH!

In Communication, Griot, Networking, News, Self Improvement, Travel on January 5, 2015 at 7:08 am

Chances are, if you’re reading this, then you already KNOW where I live: ONLINE, most of the time. Even when I’m out and about I’m usually still connected, in more ways than one. It’s my neighborhood. It’s the people I familiarize with and the things that we do therein, everyday. It’s great.

I’m rarely bored in my neighborhood and while all of us live somewhere with some level of awesomeness, I’m sure — I wanted to share a piece of my neighborhood with you this morning. You know I’m an artsy girl, so let’s start this week out in the ARTS DISTRICT:

I may reside in Arizona, but I find that New York has the most awesome museums. I haven’t travelled the world over, but even in the key places that I have hit, all that I have mingled with hail NY as an arts mecca.

Exhibits open and exhibits close –
todays showcases go blow-for-blow.

The first one opened several years ago and has since closed,
But in my neighborhood — it always has open doe’s [doors]:

Then there’s that awesome exhibit that opened last month –
the Metropolitain Museum hosted an artistic slam dunk.

It was the CUBISM exhibit – crafted in sweat, love and no whim.
The work of Braque, Gris, Picasso and Leger; the existence bears no dim:

Cubism: The Leonard A. Lauder Collection from Above York, LLC on Vimeo.

In my neighborhood, (that is most limitless), I can go anywhere I want to.
I wake up early, rarely in a hurry and do what I want to do.

4am is my preferred time to get up and roam the “www” streets.
Regardless the hour, there’s a strong social power – there’s no telling who I might meet.

My neighborhood is rich. If it’s conversation that you’re seeking,
I’ve more than a few friends who are dimensionally blog speaking:

Neither of my neighobrs are on a ‘news headline’ roll,
most are on beauty, improvement and mundane control.

My neighborhood is rich and our outlook is strong.
Stop and smell the roses – don’t ‘do rut‘ too long.

This is the first Monday of 2015, I’m up and happy about it.
My neigborhood is rich … I’m a literary stitch
It would be weird if I didn’t type it or shout it.

Rise and shine babies. There’s so much to do!
I’m Qui
Welcome to 2015 – There’s new opportunity for you!

…in my neighborhood.
and it’s all to-the-good.

About The 80’s

In Communication, Griot, Music, Self Improvement, TV Shows on August 4, 2014 at 7:42 am

80s MusicI lived through them. I remember the period like it was yesterday,
the span was 1980-1981 and I was in the 5th grade.

When Ronald Reagan was president and Richard Pryor was still LIVE,
when going to a Drive-In Movie Theater was still a cool weekend vibe.

Yes, I remember a lot ABOUT The 80’s and I remember it well.
When “Girls just want to have fun’ was an airwaves spell.
When MTV’s music was limit-free and the channel: revolutionary,
it’s breakout beginning lead us to Rap being introduced by Fab 5 Freddy.

I do remember – yes! I was there.
We rocked jerry curls and curly perms – I loved big hair;
it was a time when cigarettes lawfully burned amidst the indoors air.

It wasn’t fair, but the 50’s made it seem cool,
to request a ‘no smoking’ section then – was to be ‘acting a fool.’

Comedian Andrew Dice Clay would do it to the max,
and I was hospitalized for wheezing and asthma attacks.

Things have changed since I was a grade school adolescent lady,
I can’t help but break a smile when I think ABOUT The 80’s.

There was Boy George, Lisa-Lisa and Cult Jam and Michael Jackson hype.
There was Salt n Pepper, Big Daddy Cane and my main girl MC LYTE.

I remember when a prerequisite for rapping was a unique vocabulary.
I was queen of words for all to have heard – things I loved ABOUT The 80’s.

Girls were popping and boys were girl-crazy.
Music was romantic and we dreamt of making babies.

Now that’s the part, I’m glad is gone – the music industry was crazy.
Sex stayed on our mind. Those darn romantic 1980’s.

YO! MTV Raps hit the scene in the 80’s and knocked a hole in the rock video game.
I was impressed with the Rap address, but the loss of rock and roll – I felt, was lame.

Yes I was a stone cold rocker. I liked it all. If it rebelled, I rocked.
But when MTV took on rap – it wound up rocks TV clock.

There used to be one commercial that would start my school morning beat,
where various music stars would decry: “I want my MTV”.

.
There was nothing like head banging music – MTV would call out to my eyelids.
Rock and Roll would wake me up – no coffee cup… I had the coolest of parents.

Salt n’ Pepa formed my high school years and of course I became a rapper.
My words so clean; intellect mean– screw fashion, my mind was dapper.

Dapper is a word yielded to men that are high end in their fashion style.
My mind crossed barriers so clean and so tough, even they admired my wields.
Oooo child.

It was all About The 80’s. I graduated from high school in 1989.
Bold in taste a literary in your face, I entered society and all was fine.

College followed immediately after, but not before I fell in love – yo!
For in 1990 cupid yielded my honey deep in love with my HS beau,
and so…

WhenI think About The 80’s. The Thriller of good music comes to mind,
fonder days that have passed away, still bear a brand new shine.

No matter where I am in life, or what I’m doing on my grind,
I’m Qui
and when I think About The 80’s nothing but good comes to mind.

If you missed the 80’s because you weren’t born, feel free to fashion the day.
Life is meant to be purposeful, sure, after a good run of love and play.

Speaking of re-living the 80’s, let it not involve politics.
While the music and cable shows were amazing – that other stuff was lame and sick.

Let’s get back to the days of surplus!
Let’s get back to EXPRESSING ART and free hugs.
You can start with big hair but most importantly let’s start with showing more love.
Me first:
XOXO

Halloweens Monday Mix

In Communication, Griot, News, TV Shows on October 31, 2011 at 10:51 am

I’m on top of the world, (I am), and it’s just Day 2 –
According to the 7 day calendar that is my truth.

Ol’ Rick Perry looked as high as Charlie Sheen
during last Fridays zooted out media stream.

Before taking the podium to communicate a myriad of things
It appears the governor may have had a couple of drinks? 🙂
Peep his (out of character) “energy” to see what I mean:

Also on this Monday, I am packing to move;
relocating out of state is my current groove.

The president promised jobs and congress said damnit!
Then INTEL called my guy to duly take advantage.

My daughter is a freshman at an MISD school,
who thinks this ‘relocating thing’ is so ultra cool.

Just knowing she thinks so – makes me feel a bit merry;
for our financial low was beginning to look kind of scary. lol!

Halloween is fun — I like the unpredictable scare,
but never wanted to see my finances GO there.

BOO! It’s Monday and we’re starting over again;
A brand new week – a brand new zen.
Tonight I’ll be in costume again,
to make my neighbors blush and grin.

I do it every year. I’m hardly one to behave.
Last years lady bug will be this years french maid.

Fishnet stockings on legs and mock cuffs on wrists,
Un-bowling chocolate candy in loads by the fist.

I’ve got ART work to do — which I enjoy doing a lot,
I’ve got to complete my daughters halloween costume robot.

It’s the cutest thing – I learned “How To” from a GRANGER dude.
Perhaps you saw his instructional video posted up on al la YouTube: Oooo.

Last year I bowled chocolates – you should’ve seen how fast they went.
Today’s sweeter sensation is Herman Cain’s relation to sexual harassments.
What a fine time for alleged victims to surface & vent.
Is his honeymoon with conservatives already spent?

What an awesomely frightening mix and appropriate for the day.
My kid produced the headline pic post last nights scary bake.

Well it’s Monday for sure – and with that it’s HALLOWEEN,
I’m Qui

That “French Maid she” ready to hone the candy scene.
I’m a giver.😉

Blondie told you what he said — I’m here to show you what he’s doing NOW:

Anytime is a good time to hump a legendary view

Fab is in Harlem, Fab is on the Vegas Strip.
Fab could be anywhere – he’s not shy of a trip.

Recently I received a few inquiries in search of the Hip Hop Statesman,
so I went on the prow for those Flip & iphone vids he be makin‘.

Fab and Technology equates to productive moving and shakin’.

Fab is in Jamaica, Fab is in France.
Fab is literally an ART HEAVY 1-Man-Band.

ART is what moves him. ART de-coagulates the blood in his veins.
Art was the reason why he spray painted those subway trains. lol!

When you don’t hear from this brother often, (via TV or on the NEWS),
please know that he is hard at work creating new and exciting views.

His cultural impact is ton weighty – He’s got the best knowledgeable flow.
I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again, he introduced me to the term: GRIOT. (pronounced Gree-OH).

Today I’m feeling a little artsy. Today I’m feeling rather FLY,

Life PURPOSE. What is your lifes PURPOSE? Some find out early in life like Fab 5 Freddy.

Fred Brathwaite is his birth name, but around the globe he’s recognized as the Graffiti Artist famous for the subway spray painting done in 1979 with LEE Quinones (a tribute to Andy Warhol’s famous Campbell Soup piece). ART was the PURPOSE. Fab 5 Freddy went on to aid the facilitation of HIP HOP into America’s mainstream pop culture when he hosted YO! MTV RAPS – the perfect global segway into black culture…through Rap.

YO! brought black people (and many other races) from every corner around the world onto one insightful accord through Saturday morning joints hosted by yours truly: Fab 5 Freddy. An impactful and historical vien was opened and Mr. Brathwaite was at the helms. What a PURPOSE. HIP HOP: A HUGE cultural watermark that still moves the world on a whole — to one beat. A Grafitti Artist, turned Rap Show Host, turned Music Video Director, Documentary Producer, Co-exec Film Producing, Co Exec VH1 Hip Hop Honors Producing and now a YOUTUBE Curator… ART. He’s ba-aack.

A recent email from the Legend lead me to a YOUTUBE Curator page hosted by Fab 5 Freddy. Check out his new ART Concept on the video. It’s a jewel of a concept. He can’t help but pioneer and “host”

I believe this young man started his career in his teens.
Time has graciously missed him completely by crease or seam.

Some are lucky to find one purpose while Fab has found many.
When it comes to pioneering opportunities – his name comes up plenty.

I’ve noticed that his eyes still gleam when he’s talking about his ART.
I fancy the Legends mindI’m a digger of deep intellect & smarts.

Heightened knowledge is sound and Longevity is key,
I’m Qui

PURPOSE‘ful in my Griot formatspost educated by Fab 2+3.

Naked on The Grassy Knoll

In Music on March 31, 2010 at 6:03 am

A Window Seat with Erykah Badu

A Naked Erykah Badu on the grassy knoll in Dallas where President Kennedy was shot, is stirring up all kinds of controversy over the last two days. The video “WINDOW SEAT” [watch it HERE] is phenomenal (if you ask me) and for a plethora of reasons: Unbridled ART being #1.

Ms. Badu walks the downtown streets of Dallas towards the exact spot where President Kennedy was assasinated. During her walk she sheds her jacket, shirt, pants, bra and panties — ultimately revealing the “EVOLVING” tattoo (message) across the upper part of her back (between the shoulders). Once she reaches the approximate spot where President Kennedy was shot, we hear gunfire and a shapely NAKED Erykah Badu falls dead in the road. At that point we hear the following narration:

“THEY (playing it safe) are quick to assasinate what they do not understand.
They move in packs ingesting fear more and more with every act of hate on one another.
They feel more comfortable in groups – LESS GUILT to swallow.
They are us. This is what we’ve become: Affraid to RESPECT the Individual.
A single person within a circumstance can move one to CHANGE;
to LOVE herself;
EVOVLE.

By God Erykah is right! WE are THEY –collectively.

More over that, the video demonstrates Erykah being “one person within a circumstance” — a circumstance that the city of Dallas is now investigating for possible copyright infringements. As you can see, (Watch Video HERE), it doesn’t look like too many copyright laws have been infringed upon besides the few seconds of audible narration that opens the video. However, in all honesty — THAT too would be easy to recreate with Final Cut Soundtrack Pro. The video reel was shot and edited to have a “dated & historical feel” much like the original footage archived of President Kennedy during his visit to Dallas, TX. GENIUS!

The video is GENIUS in two parts, [1] by recalling history & stirring up discomfort and [2] comes in an obvious plea found in the songs chorus:

“I need you to want me.
I need you miss me.
I need yo’ attention!
I need you next to me.
I need someone to clap for me.
I need yo’ direction.
Come back – Come back Baby.
Come back.”

I’M BACK 🙂 and I’m so glad I’ve got a WINDOW SEAT into the vision of Ms. Erykah Badu’s artsy exhibition of history and present — to date. What did you think about it?
