WHAT MEN WANT

In Comedy, Communication, Griot, Movies, Networking, News, Video on February 15, 2019 at 12:22 pm

.

Sometimes I sit and wonder to myself
how men think and operate within themselves.

I admit on the subject that I don’t commit to thinking too long,
and after seeing Taraji’s new film I need an Erykah Badu song

and a bag of that magical herbal tea
that she pushed on her patrons and Taraji P.

Erykah’s character also sold weed
in the back of a salon that installed weaves.

This film was easy going and fun to see.
In addition to my patronage, I brought an additional three

and we all enjoyed the theater haunt
that entertained us for 2-hours on WHAT MEN WANT.

So what do they want? You may ask.
Child, you’ll have to see the film to truly bask

in why women should not be privy to men’s passing thoughts.
None were too lewd; I’ve heard many through a faux cough

in my own life.
Though yesterday was about Tina Gordon‘s write

and co-written with Peter Hyuck and Alex Gregory too.
Taraji P. and 8 others executed the films produce.

Taraji was like Paula Patton in the way that she walked the project through.
No shade to Proud Mary, but the WHAT MEN WANT film had more juice.

Okay – the last say may contain a wee bit of shade for Proud Mary.
It’s just that the project was strong before its final cut was miscarried.

WHAT MEN WANT
delivered on many fronts:

The storyline was good and the situations were fresh.
Did the composition and cast yield a comedic gas? Yes!

I laughed out loud often as did my plus-3 party of friends.
We laughed and nudged in the dark from beginning to end.

aldis-hodge_b-e-t.jpgEspecially at what some of the men were thinking – I’ll divvy no spoilers here.
But I will say that Taraji’s co-star Aldis Hodge is a talent our audience held dear.

I heard a few gasps when he came onto the screen.
I remember Aldis as Noah from the UNDERGROUND scene.

My, my, my, it was good to see him cast in a single father’s role
and the chemistry between him and Taraji P was relative gold.

Yes. I really liked it. erykah-badu_what-men-want.JPG
Again big ups to SISTER, the weed selling psychic.

Big ups to Tracy Morgan  who played the dad that held it down
when it was time for his son to be NBA draft-bound.
He was the no-nonsense Dad who’s prone to clown.

I saw a little bit of a Levar Ball ingredient as his storyline did unfold.
Tracy’s character had merchandise to promote his son, including a trademarked logo.

Tracy held his weight and added cohesiveness to the script.
Every element of this film was well placed – none shot from the hip.

I’m sure I laughed through a few quips; this film is a winner and at the conclusion, I felt refreshed.
I’m Qui
and it was good to see Taraji P. Henson continue to shine and look her best.

I say as much because – we all know her as Cookie from Empire.
Empire is no comedy, therefore Taraji’s talent is just fire.

Icon in the Making

Janelle Monae’ inspires herself.

The new face of Afro-Futurism

The new face of Afro-Futurism

This is not to say that she’s an egoist or that she doesn’t take inspiration from life and objects around her. But it is to say that in her own struggle to complete the painting and to name the colorful woman depicted, she wound up jpenning an album. And not just a regular ole two-major-hits album, The Electric Lady offers 12 tracks of great listens.

Under Big Boi’s esoteric tutelage, she’s had several well received projects; however, the this is the one that will probablhy launch Monae’ , 27, from underground indie-cool popularity to NBA Finals halftime show superstardom. Yes, it’s that good, and yes, she’s that good live. It also doesn’t hurt that she snagged Prince as a collaborator and didn’t shy away from instructing him on how to improve his studio sound.

Nervy? Hell, yeah. But tha’s Monae’. “I love to collaborate with people I admire,” says the Kansas City, Kan., native and Cover Girl model, wearing her traditional black and white , topped off by a slightly cat-eyed pair of Prada sunnies. She partnered with Erykah Badu, Solange, Miguel and Esperanza Spalding on The Electric Lady. working with Prince was similarly “organic,” she says. “I’m still pinching myself. You need to have vision when you come to him. He does not do a lot of collaborations.”

Janelle Monae' said

As one of the young heralds of Afrofuturism, and old-yet-renewing movement embracing a combination of magical realism, sci-fi, space is firmly cemented. She’s been compared to Sun Ra, the creator of musical Afrofuturism. She loves Octavia Butler who wrote science fiction novels featuring Black characters and ex-anime Black history in the same breath. She’s a tremendous fan of Star Wars and performed at the recent wedding of George Lucas and Melody Hobson. And, as she ponders ideas such as time travel and androids, she paints futuristic sketches with images portraying us as “Electric” people wanting to be named, freed or discovered.

“I do Afro punk,” says Monae’ referring to futurism. “I have an Afro, so why now? I think it’s important to bring awareness. It’s important to show us a Black woman, as a Black people, in different lights.”

A common theme in all of MOnae’s music is a celebration of individuality, which is why her robotic focus on her debut studio album, The Arch-Android, was a bit ironic. She sticks to that motif this time around but is adding quite a bit of sass and sex, as is obvious in her MTV Video Music Award-winning vidoe for Q.U.E.E.N., with Badu.

Most ideas come after she works in her personally prepped recording studio utopia, Wondaland, in Atlanta.

“I’m dealing with politics, love heartbreak and sexuality, all those things we privately have,” says Monae’, describing her album in staccato. She then demurely declines to talk about her love life, only adding this: “It is about loving yourself as much as you can.”

Janelle has it going on – the mic is her vocal toy.
How genius of her to hook up with ATL’s Big Boi.

He’s all about producing. His individuality is truly valiant,
and he rarely misses an opportunity to sign award winning talent.

I’m watching Big Boi and I am taking notes too,
I’m seeking talent to shape tomorrows film truths.

Talent must be bold, daring and trend set.
Must write and produce scripts they’ve never met.

Must surpass the Steven’s: Spielberg and King.
Must go forward like the will of OWN and reel the whole thing.

Be they eccentric or on some new stuff,
they must be resilient – the industry is rough.

Janelle is on it. She’s working within her purpose.
I’m Qui
On my joint too: shaping the youth via my surplus.

Icon in the making?
The role is yours for the taking.
Do you want it?

LABOR DAY Happenings

Erykah Badu’s soothing sounds pulled me through

Erykah Badu & Jay Electronica

Post hearing the news that Michael had passed—
my sunny beginnings inherited an overcast.

Michael was so full of love with the most contagious laugh.
My heart went out to Omarosa — My God, I know she’s sad.

So I pulled out a stack old musical CD’s
in search of a voice that could minister to me.

I found in that stack: Ms. Erykah Badu.
I put her on repeat – and my soul she did sooth.

Life is so fragile. Life is so sweet.

Erykah kept me company at my souls window seat.

I sang along (off key) and resounded the love in the air.
I cried as I thought of Omorosa. I cried because I care.

Listening to Erykah Badu lead me to research her as well,
and there I lingered on Google reading about her for a spell.

It was good. It was good.
She’s from my Dallas/Fort Worth hood.

Multiple songs rang out of my CD player
as I read more and more about the mundane life slayer.

Erykah is hardly the one you would call mundane.
The girl is mad talented. Her vocals are insane.

I read of her procreation and watched her music video’s.
She’s got 3 kids by 3 dads — and each union is good as gold.
What a story to be told…

Andre3000 fathered the first in 1997
The little man solidifies their clan
and is respectfully named Seven.

In 2004, she fertilized another intellectuals seed
and gave birth to Puma – daughter of The D.O.C.

In 2009 Erykah birthed another Baduizm star,
fathered by Jay Electronica, they produced baby Mars.

Now normally when you hear that a chick has a lot of baby daddies,
One thinks she is not wise, and her family planning skills are shabby.

But this is not the case of Ms. Erykah Badu.
The woman is wise – the woman spews the truth.

She loved each man, and they loved her back.
But a future with either wasn’t in fates stack.

She’s no video vixen, out to collect child support.
Each man feels blessed to have reaped a Baduizm score.

Each father is involved in their childrens lives.
And Erykah is the bond – @FatBellyBella is wise.

Not only that but every man she procreated with has a mind of gold.
Erykah is rocking game that is not to be told – but definitely to be sold.

Perhaps she should write a book, but in the meantime, I’m jamming the CDs,
I’m Qui
Researching Erykah Badu, her love life and her soul rooted seeds.

Doing so certainly brightened my Labor Day with ease.
Ms. Erykah Badu – did minister to me.
Ooo wee – the child is so vocally sweet.

Raising the labor…

So Labor Day was yesterday and boy did I have fun.
I didn’t eat BBQ or hang with a crew– but I did BOWFLEX & run.

I spent my day playing with my kid – who’s full of teen ideas.
She suggested we go for a run, I went along like ‘no big deal’.

Me? Im not a runner. I wish I were – but never have been.
Though once I passed the 5-mile mark in minutes under 10.

Actually I’m like Paul Ryan, as I totally made that [stat] up.
Me running 2.8 on a treadmill – is more ‘my running sum’.

Getting fit is feeling great!
No BBQ ever touched my plate.

I chilled with fam, we laughed, had fun and played,
I’m Qui
And I had a blast
reducing my body mass on Labor Day.

The Big Guy said ‘Goodbye’

Michael & his Fiance’ Omarosa —
Life is short.

You must celebrate your best life today.
Sept. 3rd — Michael Duncan passed away.

He was only 54 – so young and so fine.
Getting better with age – a sweet glass of wine.

A strong man, with a strong mind; his taste in women was also smart.
Omarosa was there when he fell-out and CPR jump-started his heart.

Omarosa was his fiance, though barely anyone ever knew.
So while you’re praying for Mikes fam – pray for Omarosa too.

Life is at hand. Celebrate! Celebrate! Celebrate.
Never let the mundane stains cause you stop and wait.

“Time is non-refundable”, says the wise and fit Joe G.
Life is at hand. Live it to the fullest and let others be.

You don’t have time to be worried, about who’s doing what – to who.
Time is promised to no one – you gotta live each moment for you.

Please do.

Naked on The Grassy Knoll

In Music on March 31, 2010 at 6:03 am

A Window Seat with Erykah Badu

A Naked Erykah Badu on the grassy knoll in Dallas where President Kennedy was shot, is stirring up all kinds of controversy over the last two days. The video “WINDOW SEAT” [watch it HERE] is phenomenal (if you ask me) and for a plethora of reasons: Unbridled ART being #1.

Ms. Badu walks the downtown streets of Dallas towards the exact spot where President Kennedy was assasinated. During her walk she sheds her jacket, shirt, pants, bra and panties — ultimately revealing the “EVOLVING” tattoo (message) across the upper part of her back (between the shoulders). Once she reaches the approximate spot where President Kennedy was shot, we hear gunfire and a shapely NAKED Erykah Badu falls dead in the road. At that point we hear the following narration:

“THEY (playing it safe) are quick to assasinate what they do not understand.
They move in packs ingesting fear more and more with every act of hate on one another.
They feel more comfortable in groups – LESS GUILT to swallow.
They are us. This is what we’ve become: Affraid to RESPECT the Individual.
A single person within a circumstance can move one to CHANGE;
to LOVE herself;
EVOVLE.

By God Erykah is right! WE are THEY –collectively.

More over that, the video demonstrates Erykah being “one person within a circumstance” — a circumstance that the city of Dallas is now investigating for possible copyright infringements. As you can see, (Watch Video HERE), it doesn’t look like too many copyright laws have been infringed upon besides the few seconds of audible narration that opens the video. However, in all honesty — THAT too would be easy to recreate with Final Cut Soundtrack Pro. The video reel was shot and edited to have a “dated & historical feel” much like the original footage archived of President Kennedy during his visit to Dallas, TX. GENIUS!

The video is GENIUS in two parts, [1] by recalling history & stirring up discomfort and [2] comes in an obvious plea found in the songs chorus:

“I need you to want me.
I need you miss me.
I need yo’ attention!
I need you next to me.
I need someone to clap for me.
I need yo’ direction.
Come back – Come back Baby.
Come back.”

I’M BACK 🙂 and I’m so glad I’ve got a WINDOW SEAT into the vision of Ms. Erykah Badu’s artsy exhibition of history and present — to date. What did you think about it?

I need your Support, I need your Love, I need your Attention,
