Gimme 5 On The Fabulous Side

.

Life is only whatever we decide to value and make of it.
Some folks achieve so much good that you pray, ‘they never quit.

Einstein said, “Creativity is Intelligence Having Fun,”
then I said,
“And some folks will make a living out of it, hun.”

Fab 5 Freddy is one of those folk. He’s been listed in societal pages since he was a teen.
So the other day while on my “learn & play” I found more vibrant light into his scene:

NPR –  In 1978, Michael Holman moved to New York City for a job on Wall Street, where he “read a short blurb in The Village Voice. Fred Brathwaite, who served as an informal spokesperson for the Fabulous 5 graffiti crew, put out a call for readers to hire them to create custom burners at their businesses or homes, priced by the square foot…”

Genius!
How about my quote on “making a living out of it?” Don’t forget it too soon.
Einstein’s wisdom is tried and true; Fab was trying it out by noon.

I chuckled at the NPR write up. I’ve known Fab for more than a decade and I am still learning his moves as if they are new.
My friend is a legend of youth-appealing truths!

If by chance, you have been living on the other side of the cool side
and you are not familiar with my friend, Fab 5, his art, or his writes —
I invite you to drop in on his multi dimensional site:

He has been, at one time or another, a graffiti artist, a rapper, an internationally exhibited painter, a video and TV-commercial director, a screenwriter, a film scorer, an actor, a lecturer, and a television personality,” (Orlean, The NEW YORKER 1991)

Susan Orlean published a fabulous piece in The NEW YORKER Profiles Section titled: LIVING LARGE | The World of Fab Five Freddy. At the time Fab was hosting MTV’s YO! MTV RAPS and I was glued to the tube like it was the source for water & food. I was into the dude who seemed to open and close every Hip Hop video that made an impression on the souls of millions of viewers during Hip Hop’s formative years. In fact, Fab wasn’t just a rap host at its infancy, he was a Music Video Director, too:

Remember when RAP used to serve WISDOM on WAX? | Directed by Fab 5 Freddy

When KRS dropped MY PHILOSOPHY, I was a sophomore in high school giving deep thought to verse and chorus… giving deep thought to the music video’s visual highlights and metaphorical breakdowns. For instance, at the video mark 2:28 Fab can be seen crossing the camera at: “Like all my brothers eat chicken and watermelon. Talk with broken English and drug sellin.'” Awesome juxtaposition to point out BS stereotypes. The view of ‘a diplomat of networking cultures (Fab 5 Freddy) is a contrast to the words. Perfect and profound.

Fab 5 Freddy has vision and it has been with him, dare I say, since birth. Born the eldest child to the union of his parents and the God-son to Max Roach, this guy was born ‘to a beat. 22-years after his birth, WILD STYLE was born as an introduction to Music & Dance evolution. Obviously Fab set his sights for success pretty high when he was a lad. Speaking of high: CANNABIS & ART. What are your thoughts on it? Fab has set his sights on the topic, and, well, it looks like a lot of green:

NETFLIX presents GRASS IS GREENER

In a recent piece published in the NY DAILY NEWS, Fab recalls watching his father host friends in the early ‘70’s, “Jazz recordings and the smell of cannabis filled the air. Later that decade, I became a graffiti artist, smoked “cheeba” as it was then known and played a role in the inception of hip-hop culture. I’m blessed to have grown up in New York City and to witness firsthand how cannabis is endemic to American music and freedom of expression.”

Fab 5 Freddy is both Director and Producer of Netflix’s GRASS IS GREENER Documentary. The reel extends to much more than exhaling into a good feeling for 90-minutes. It covers two important objectives:

  • To explain the foundations and capacity of Marijuana
  • To use the film’s revenue to help recover lives lost to the criminalization of Marijuana

To strengthen his objective on this front, Fab 5 Freddy went into mode From The Block to The Boardroom,” with Curaleaf, a multi-state Medical Marijuana Dispensary network to produce the B NOBLE Pre-Roll brand.

Inform, elevate, and lift are the first 3 points out of 5 in Fred Brathwaite’s aka.In order to learn more about the other 2 points, you’ll have to catch him in person. Fab 5 Freddy’s life philosophy is an amazing 2 cents that only he can best convey.

What a life! So worthy of “5 On The Fabulous Side+ 2 more. Let me explain the additional 2 cents. Today’s compositional install was created from 5 reference links pointing directly to Fab 5 Freddy, his current pursuits and progressive conquers. In the process of stitching together writes to share a dimensional view of High 5’s for Fab 5, I was excited to realize that my article research turned up 2 additional reference URL’s beyond NPR, Curaleaf, Wikipedia, The New York Daily, and The New Yorker that dole out 411 on the Legend, and they are: Fab5Freddy.com and Qui-ME.com. Fab is an awesome force on his own, in fact, he is responsible for the talent exposure and career of many whom you watch and have jammed to for decades. No man is an island. It takes a team to deliver box office hits like NEW JACK CITY and AMERICAN GANGSTER; Fab5Freddy played the team role of Executor Producer and Consultant to their successes.

Today’s article of acknowledgement affirms that I am on the team. My role is to remain focused on those who are uplifting others and to celebrate them with confetti, champagne toasts, and digital publishings to boast. While Fab’s accomplishments are far and wide, my team support is not limited to International Go-Getters. I am very much into ‘Who is doing What in the USA. So what are you up to? I’d love to compose a 5 On The Fabulous Side for your legacy efforts, as well. Put me on the team and let’s surpass the highest of seams. Everybody loves a contact…

Pass the good 411 to me and I will pass it back… strong.
I’m Qui
High Five’ing my community because your contributions go long.

There’s no expiration on good art and informative songs:

ART and The ARTIST

QE-fab5-andy-warhol

Once upon a time, and every decade or so
there’s a huge artistic shift and the revolutions are like whoa.

The movements are born out of a need to be heard, for civility and change.
Passion paints the chains that bulges ‘the mans’ veins and leaves a legacy chalk  full of names.

Unfortunately (for most) the artist is usually “just another guy”
struggling to get noticed until the day that he dies.

Post mortem, once blind curators selfishly take up the cause
to market his limited work in high priced gallery halls.

With wine and cheese the auctions are for those who ball.
God bless the artist and the reason for his [mortality] fall.
Aren’t his successes for his DNA tresses?’ — No, no. It’s all for y’all.

The patience required for the artists to endure could physically hurt,
but when  you’re living out your purpose, it’s a pleasure and no day at work.

The reality of rent, utilities and food often suggests creativity stay at bay and at home.
Still family is key to the artists survival. Family and friends are the artists patron.

The artists road is at all not easy, it is full of turmoil and uphill treading.
The needle sews beautifully when in motion, but is a beast at it’s the threading.

Anything worth having, may pain you just a little bit.
No doubt artists blow up and burn fast, but then some are a long time hit.

Longevity is key and Andy Warhol is still banging.
For a fella who died in 1987, his relativity is still hanging.

It’s a good thang that our history has embraced his artistic take.
It’s also pretty cool info that Warhol, mentored Brathwaite.

A living legend, Fab 5 Freddy was pretty wet behind the ears in the ’80’s
still he hails a history for introducing rap to global homeboys and ladies.

MTV was the horse that he rode in on with the his hip hop news
and that subway train is a historical dimension of his artistic view.

Yes! Before Fab5 baptized and delivered YO! MTV Raps
He was known as a graffiti artists, yielding the city ‘art dap.’

He spray painted a subway car, cement walls, and has gone on to tag many historical  scenes.
His taste in art and business smarts is how he’s maintained his legendary status at  our hip hop seams.

The artist always has big dreams. He paints his dreams with a certain tool.
Dantrel Boone is drawing life…  reflecting detail — with or without school.

His talents are a natural birth right, his wisdom is deep and has been taught.
The productions that he produces are telling and surely art collector sought.

Lucky you, his work can be bought; caveat, he is merely dawning his stride.
The stories he draws gives personal pause and reason to Thank God for eyesight.

Wether he’s penciling a likeness of you, someone you love or that thing you hold dear.
You know heaven is real when a drawing invokes you to dimensionally hear.

Dantrel paints history, moments in movements and the unspoken sublime.
Dantrel communicates with one drawing after another, changing hearts and minds.

It’s his purpose and he’s living it out like the previous legends.
I pray he stay focused , gift submerged and reaps a long endin.’

Perhaps he’ll go on to make a lot of money that will surely need spendin’.
I don’t know, but Dantrel’s talent is swell and he has all the makings of a future legend.

Me? I’m all about the words; I like to write, direct, film, and shoot.
I’m Qui
Loving life; to produce is my right and doing so is a daily hoot!

I love what I do and I’m appreciative for you.
I, too, am the artist. Thanks for rolling through.
I’m most productive when I’m vibing you.
Ooo!

FFF Vegas2014 Fall

Fred “Fab5Freddy” Brathwaite – Vegas 2014

A trip to New York is not ever complete without a trip to visit my awesome mentor and dear friend Fred “Fab5Freddy” Brathwaite, so that’s exactly what I did.

Fab is a very busy man, so let me express as much as possible how honored I was to get “any of his time” let alone time at the breakfast and dinner table with him. For breakfast we dined on a read by Talib Kweli with a side of bacon, pancakes and a fantastic cup of jo, (that he prepared for us). Good stuff. The literal cuisine was captivating and rivet-connecting. The article was titled, “Nigga? Please.” It was quite sufficient.

An evening meal of Ecuadorian rice caught us discussing Steve Stout‘s: The Tanning Of America. My mentor is a museum of knowledge and always has an interesting piece on hand. No boring conversation there. Knowledge rules the world, and I prefer to be a part of the ruling force, so I jotted down a reminder to get ahold of TTOA – all four hours of it.

Yes, I made tons of notes during our time together, but getting more familiar with The Tanning of America was at the top of my list. It was broadcast live in February of this year, and I don’t know how, but somehow I must have missed it. Thanks to VH1, I’m all caught up and am able to lay it out today, for your review.

Why would you want to review the broadcast too? Well, for one, this is the perfect time to watch it. It won’t clear up anything that’s going on in the world today as it pertains to race relations, Mike Brown or Travon Martin. No. But what it will do is hip you, educate you to the culture of your other neighbor. If nothing else, it opens up an interesting discussion. America needs so many more discussions.

Let’s see what all of the melanin is about in The Tanning of America:

Fab 5 Freddy sits on the panel with an awesome lineup of #GoodHeads hosted by Gail King: Steve Stout, Nas, Al Sharpton, Billy Corben and Daymond John

The full broadcast ran 4-days, for one hour each day. Click HERE to taste the knowledge.

Unity is in the Music.
If it’ll work, then sure! Let’s use it.

There’s more connecting us, than what keeps us apart.
The Tanning of America’s discussion is timely and smart.

Schmoozing with Fab5Freddy always leaves my lobes on wrinkle,
I’m Qui
And if knowledge was bladder heavy — every 5 minutes I’d have to tinkle.

Jam a Fab Freddy throwback!
