SUPER SOUL SUNDAY Encouragement

In News, Self Improvement, TV Shows, Video on September 29, 2019 at 6:16 am

REVISIONIST HISTORY by Malcolm Gladwell is worth listening to and reading into.
He has been watching and chronicling the world; what we’re going through.

I am always in search of SUPER SOUL fuel
and I know there’s some in-excess on OWN’s tube.

So I drop in to tickle my ears with such chime –
and to my delight I was introduced to Malcolm this time.

I’ve met many others on OWN who share the good that they ahere.
I have met him, him, him, her and Norman Lear.

There are so many good people sending out good vibes into the world.
We don’t have to know them all personally, but Oprah is their girl

and through her we are all able to see goodness full blown.
There’s nourishment in narrative and reality shows on OWN.

It’s good to know that we have places to go to when we need to recharge,

What the CANE – Queen Sugar

In Communication, Griot, TV Shows on July 21, 2017 at 6:16 am

Did you see the episode 6 of Queen Sugar a couple of days ago?
The family dinner that closed the show was pretty hard to throat.

Post their fathers headstone memorial everyone came back to the house,
They sat down at the table before the dine to commune for a while
and ooo child

let me tell you what went down then:
Aunt Vi and Hollywood witnessed frayed ends.

Ralph Angel (RA) is the youngest and only Bordelon male child
he found a letter addressed to him from their father after he died

Ernest Bordelon left the lot of his farm to his son Ralph Angel to passed down to Blue.

Initially he shared the letter with Aunt Vi
And her surmise: the letter could ruin their lives

Because big sis Charlie has invested big dough – she’s the farms financial motor.
Their fathers last days were spent cleaning toilets, learned (middle sis), Nova.

Charlie was blindsided by all and asked the fam to ‘hold the phone,’
And clarified that the letter Ernest wrote gave the farm to RA, alone!?

RA said, “Yeah. Y’all can read it for yourself.
Both his sisters got up – but no for the mail

Nova and Charlie both started heading for the door.
I got the impression they were done with the “unity” score.

Aunt Vi, Hollywood and Darla sat at the table in silence…
I wasn’t talking either. I was busy writing this. 📝

What the Cane is going on with the fam?
The farm belongs to Ralph Angel. The ladies are like ‘damn.’
What now?

Episode 6 is titled: Line Of Our Elders and rightfully so.
We are passed down and inherit our ancestors beloved whoas.

The content of this series is sweet, sticky and thick.
I’m Qui
A candy lover though eating too much Cane can make you sick.

The family vibe

MONDAYS Maybe — My Sure FIRE BABY

carmen-jones-pinupOoo wee and yes lawd, things are getting a bit hot.
I’ve got it, he want’s it — not sure if I want to ‘get got.’

If loving you is WRITE I don’t want to be wrong.
I’m DNA to the southern pin up Carmen Jones.

Not quite Louisianan; I don’t read chicken bones.
I’m a hallelujah girl – Jesus is my ‘jones.

I pray. I walk a key & tailored line…
the view is good from the front – the view is good from behind

and good lawd — the deeds that do occupy my time
are good for me; my colorful sublime.

I can’t physically bottle it but I can type it out.
A literal Monday will be my lips pout.

MAC Gold. Lips sticking out but I’m not mad nor hurt,
This fire I’m fanning is quite the invoking flirt.
qui-footwear-2017It’s drawing me in and pulling up my skirt,
it’s roughing up my hair, but no — it doesn’t hurt.

It’s firm and it’s good…
you know that paper is made from wood.

Wood is a natural erection. Nature gives us that.
And now a forest is before me so with my ax – I’m up to bat.

The day is young however when it gets old,
I’m stacking enough wood to stave off future colds.

It’s pouring out of me, so today I will produce and concept bottle.
I’ve got my laptop, my coffee pot and I’m on CREATION THROTTLE

and it feels good.
I’m making wood.

It could get you hard…
Good lawd.

But I’m willing to bet
if you’re “about that skirt” – it’ll get you wet.

The skirt that I flaunt produces color and excites…
comparable to what you’d see on Brown Suga or that OWN Network of writes.

An insight of delights and the title list is long:
Intellectual, action-packed, and chemistry strong.

My creative mood is quite firm, so I’m going hard!
Happiness is about me, ooo wee and good lawd.

When crafting life imitating pieces many canvases may be used.
Sometimes I strike and start over, other times I blur and fuse.

Cool Stuff on my desk…

In Communication, Dream Journal, Griot, Networking, News, Self Improvement, Sports, TV Shows on November 14, 2016 at 7:19 am

qui-desk-nov2016Good morning sweetheart, I hope that you are well
and have taken a couple of #SelfPreservation moments for yourself.

I dream a lot when I’m asleep. Doth you and do you ever recall?
I usually wake up in the midst of my dreams clutch and yes! — I remember all.

Though as of late the dreams have been a bit different
and I seem to have the option to forget them or to remember.

I journal a lot in book bind, but as of late, I’ve been a little lazy.
I’ve not been doing much journaling but dream noting before the memories get hazy.

I did no dream journaling this weekend, but did I dream? BOY DID I.
I have also retained their memories — and I most certainly did not try.

The dreams have been adventurous in nature, but not necessarily my go-to-fun.
While all may need interpreting on many levels I think I’ve decoded one.

I dreamed of snow on my family’s estate home on a hillside back in a time before my birth.
The snow on the ground: is a metaphor for the cold feelings; my family’s dysfunctional girth.

It was in the final stages of melting and for all that it’s worth
that’s good news for me, my relatives and my last nerves. 😀

There were many more signs and I’m about decoding dreamland scenes…
If you’re nosy like me, drop in on this site and give a go at understanding your dreams:

I keep the link bookmarked inside of my google chrome desk.
I keep my dream research notes real close to my vest.

Who the heck cares about what I’m dreaming?
I do, because it helps me to tighten my seaming.

Speaking of tightening productive seams, when was the last time you tuned into OWN?
I do it every so often because I’m black and I’m grown ISO which generational seeds were sewn

that yield to curse and give way to legacy love.
I tune into OWN because I’m a #SelfEmpowering thug.

This weekend while I was thugging, I came up on Iyanla V.’s show
a show participant read the following piece and I was like ‘Woah.’

I like it very much so I thought I’d share it with you,
and anytime you’re in a bind of angst finds – here’s what you do:

Arlington, TX, USA; Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott (21) celebrates with quarterback Dak Prescott (4)

The Dallas Cowboys won again. This makes our record 8-1.
Dak will continue to lead the pack, but Romo is not done.

Romo needs time to heal from all of the previous career jeer sacks.
Switching in a hurry isn’t for Jerry; therefore Ro will have Daks back.

Romo isn’t tripping at all – I’m channeling that he isn’t even really that mad
He just wants to go to the Superbowl and he’ll take a captains ride with Dak.

I’m surely pitching for the future. I’d love to see the Cowboys back in the playoff’s.
I was a Troy Aikman girl, then Romo changed my world and now Dak is the new cost.

It’s a bit of a new fit, but isn’t that life.
We just had an election and voted in strife.

Sometimes the coolest stuff happens when you live and let live.
The coolest stuff happens when you’re compassionate and give

a little of yourself, your time and your understanding,

QUEEN SUGAR

In Book, Communication, Griot, Movies, Networking, News, Self Improvement, TV Shows on September 16, 2016 at 5:43 am

queen-sugar-book-coverWhat do you know about cane sugar? Any takers? Anyone have memories, like my own,  from the South of grandparents buying sugar cane then coming home and cutting you off a piece of the bamboo looking stalk that tasted like 100% sugar water? It was amazing that this candy-like pleasure grew out of the ground. As a child I loved it and today,  — I’m digging on that scripted family in NC that make up the series QUEEN SUGAR. It’s unusually sweet in its beginning as I DVR’d the run. The series is only 3 episodes in for season 1 and dare I say the start up is sticky?

The FAM:

You’ve got to meet Ralph, Charley and Nova, they are the kids of Mr. and Mrs. Bordelon. Season 1 started out with Dad in tow, the patriarch of the family, (portrayed by COOLIE HIGH‘S character, Preacher – who in reality is portrayed by the awesome Glynn Thurman!

coolie-high-preacher   queen-sugar-glynn-turman  I remember meeting the talents of Glynn at my adolescent introduction of the iconic film COOLIE HIGH. He played Preacher, the smart consistency of the teen friends pack — who had to make sense of it all in the end. If you haven’t seen Coolie High – DO.  Anwho, Glynn is the Bordelon patriarch and he owns the cane fields that were likely passed down to him from the generation before.

queen-sugar-fam-on-porch

L-R; Ralph Angel, Charley and Nova Bordelon

3 episodes into Queen Sugar and pops is tops with stress
It’s diagnosed ‘a stroke’ and he’s in the hospital – bed rest.

During said episode 3
the patriarchs condition ‘robs his speech.’

REAL STUFF. Stress produces strokes.
The cane fields don’t pay the bills – still a familial yoke.

Dad didn’t recover. He gave up the ghost.
Now Ralph Angel, Nova and Charley don’t have him no ‘mo.

With 2 more episodes loaded in the chamber for the month of September
I implore you early, to consume QUEEN SUGAR. Please do remember.

It broadcast on OWN and I’m pretty excited
Natalie Baszile is credited with the #WriteIt.

Directed by the film visionary Ava DuVernay —
this brand new OWN series is already another #Slay!

This outbreak of cultural knock-out film scripts and television series alike
confirms my own reasons for ever deciding to write.

My family was missing in American familial view.
So I began to craft DR. SEUSS pieces about ‘brown people’ too.

I figured Dr. Seuss just hadn’t met us,
then I waited for time to pass and opportunity to connect us.

The connection is clear. The connection is new.
Queen Sugar is before me and it’s about me and you.

Nova has intense melanin like me and Charley’s tone looks like mothers.
Ralph Angel has a different angle, he’s the loving and protective brother.

With perfect chocolate skin like no other… THANK YOU OWN.
I enjoy watching Kofi on screen. My eyes of candy are blown! 🙂

Obviously I’m excited and Queen Sugar’s writing connects on every line,
I’m Qui

Life is good. Life is fine.
Memories mature and get better like wine.

But then again there are those times
when EXCITEMENT come in and takes over your mind.

During these times one might not contemplate.
I mean, when you know you wanna’ DO IT — WHY would you WAIT?

.

I’d have done the same thing. I just know it.
When I’m excited I can’t refrain the ‘SHOW IT!’

Which is good, because it’s energy, it’s positive and I pray contagious.
To not have an opportunity to express this feeling would be outrageous.

What are you excited about today? Express yourself already!
Dance like no one’s looking, be happy, like Hoppy & Betty:

Today is new and yesterday is gone, o’ sister and brother.
I suggest taking-it to the floor with a musical score
and dancing-it-out like you’re Usher.

Do that Michael Jackson move and then shake your fandangle.
And if you feel a little Zimbabwean spirit – bust out the old Bo’ Jangles.

Heck! I’d do it! In fact, I’m up on my feet and doing a little something-something right now,

NORMAN LEAR has SOUL

In Communication, Griot, Self Improvement, TV Shows on May 16, 2016 at 4:00 am

Image… and while I’m sure it comes with a little rhythm (seeing as how he’s kept the beat of life so long), NORMAN’s SOUL is amazing. Yes! I’m talking about the creator of MAUDE, The JEFFERSON’S and ALL IN THE FAMILY. I grew up on these shows in syndication. Had they not been on television, I may not have ever noticed some socially distinct differences in cultures. Some made me laugh as a youth and others (often times) made me wonder why anyone would take pleasure in scripting such bleak views of life and the struggle – especially, tapping into and playing off of the struggle of civil rights and inequality.

If I don’t laugh, it’ll make me cry,” — when I was about 7-years old, I heard my BigMomma say these words while watching what I thought was a comedy show – in fact, her favorite show. At the time, I was conflicted in mind as to WHAT that meant. A 7-year olds position is to choose to laugh – hard and as much as possible, crying rarely crossed my mind. However, today, I understand completely what BigMomma meant, and revelation didn’t wait until I was 40 to show up. In fact, I learned to ready myself for the backlashes of racial divisiveness by watching shows like Norman Lears. Somebody had to tell me. I thank God it good_timeswas The Jefferson’s, GOOD TIMES, etc. It taught me a lot, not really about myself, but about those who formed the show and what they meant; it identified those who laughed at it and those who laughed with it– in sharp distinction. I learned to be more conscientious, to be more aware of myself, what I was doing and who I was doing it with.

That’s pretty powerful.

It’s pretty powerful to think that the creative mind of a show, NORMAN LEAR, would nearly completely shape the lives of so many therefore I was wide awake Sunday morning at 6:00am when Oprah was introducing him on SUPER SOUL SUNDAY. Did you see it? I love the SSS series because they never disappoint in the inspiration category. Early into the session Oprah asked Norman this question:

  • OPRAH: [reading from Normans published memoirs] A life in high school zeroing in on the humor of our existence, a life in college cut short by WW2, a life as crew member B-17 bomber flying 52 missions over Europe, a life in the world of entertainment with sub-lives and television, radio, movies, and music, a life as a political activists, a life in philanthropy, a late start in life as a spiritual seeker, 3 lives as a husband, 6 as a father – with my youngest born 48-years after my eldest and 4 as a grandfather.” So what I want to know is there a unifying thread that connects all of those parts of your life?
  • NORMAN: I think the unifying thread is – you know there are 2 little words in the English language that we don’t recognize as being as important as they are (for me) and they are: OVER and NEXT. When something is over, it’s over and we’re on to next. And if there was a hammock in the middle of those two words that would be what the philosophers tell us is “living in the moment,” — the hanger between Over and Next.

poweful

Norman Lear has SOUL and it’s a beautiful 93-year old clunker.
He said his “life is extended by weeks ‘knowing Jefferson is ‘GIVING IT’ to Bunker.”

Norman Lear is absolutely right
though I hope they’re RACE FREE ‘on the other side.’

decorative-line-divider1

It’s good to laugh and Norman has always had a good angle.
The media might have “brought him” but I think he’s Gods angel.

We all are such, in a sense. We’re angel’s made by God.
Some of us are vertically docile and some prefer the horizontal nod.

Meaning some of us bow to ‘yes’ – easy and some of us run to the ‘no’
as it pertains to following the law — so into lifes trials the no nodders go.

That is, generally speaking.
So put in what’cha want to get out – karma can be wreaking.

I enjoyed Norman Lears interview with Oprah, it was substantial to the spectrum of my view
I was enlightened to learn that his favorite [closing] salutation is: To be continued…

And that’s how you know after over, there will be a next
Accept “no ends,” my friends – the continuum connects.

For Norman Lear, I have respect, to GOOD LIVING – he is an abider.
I’ll yield him the highest compliment (to a man of his time) He is an AWESOME PROVIDER.

I say that because during his SSS interview Oprah asked of ‘the highest compliment’ as a question
and he said that people would say he provided for his family – (he’s still a kid from the great depression).

I am no aficionado – no, I don’t get to call it, but I do get to WRITE the shots,
I’m Qui
and Norman has provided for more than his family with all of the series footage that we’ve got.

If you have an opportunity to catch OWNS Super Soul Sunday [Season 7 – Ep. 13], please do! It’s a treat.

Icon in the Making

In Communication, Griot, Movies, Music, News, Self Improvement on October 20, 2013 at 3:03 pm

Janelle Monae’ inspires herself.

The new face of Afro-Futurism

The new face of Afro-Futurism

This is not to say that she’s an egoist or that she doesn’t take inspiration from life and objects around her. But it is to say that in her own struggle to complete the painting and to name the colorful woman depicted, she wound up jpenning an album. And not just a regular ole two-major-hits album, The Electric Lady offers 12 tracks of great listens.

Under Big Boi’s esoteric tutelage, she’s had several well received projects; however, the this is the one that will probablhy launch Monae’ , 27, from underground indie-cool popularity to NBA Finals halftime show superstardom. Yes, it’s that good, and yes, she’s that good live. It also doesn’t hurt that she snagged Prince as a collaborator and didn’t shy away from instructing him on how to improve his studio sound.

Nervy? Hell, yeah. But tha’s Monae’. “I love to collaborate with people I admire,” says the Kansas City, Kan., native and Cover Girl model, wearing her traditional black and white , topped off by a slightly cat-eyed pair of Prada sunnies. She partnered with Erykah Badu, Solange, Miguel and Esperanza Spalding on The Electric Lady. working with Prince was similarly “organic,” she says. “I’m still pinching myself. You need to have vision when you come to him. He does not do a lot of collaborations.”

Janelle Monae' said

As one of the young heralds of Afrofuturism, and old-yet-renewing movement embracing a combination of magical realism, sci-fi, space is firmly cemented. She’s been compared to Sun Ra, the creator of musical Afrofuturism. She loves Octavia Butler who wrote science fiction novels featuring Black characters and ex-anime Black history in the same breath. She’s a tremendous fan of Star Wars and performed at the recent wedding of George Lucas and Melody Hobson. And, as she ponders ideas such as time travel and androids, she paints futuristic sketches with images portraying us as “Electric” people wanting to be named, freed or discovered.

“I do Afro punk,” says Monae’ referring to futurism. “I have an Afro, so why now? I think it’s important to bring awareness. It’s important to show us a Black woman, as a Black people, in different lights.”

A common theme in all of MOnae’s music is a celebration of individuality, which is why her robotic focus on her debut studio album, The Arch-Android, was a bit ironic. She sticks to that motif this time around but is adding quite a bit of sass and sex, as is obvious in her MTV Video Music Award-winning vidoe for Q.U.E.E.N., with Badu.

Most ideas come after she works in her personally prepped recording studio utopia, Wondaland, in Atlanta.

“I’m dealing with politics, love heartbreak and sexuality, all those things we privately have,” says Monae’, describing her album in staccato. She then demurely declines to talk about her love life, only adding this: “It is about loving yourself as much as you can.”

Janelle has it going on – the mic is her vocal toy.
How genius of her to hook up with ATL’s Big Boi.

He’s all about producing. His individuality is truly valiant,
and he rarely misses an opportunity to sign award winning talent.

I’m watching Big Boi and I am taking notes too,
I’m seeking talent to shape tomorrows film truths.

Talent must be bold, daring and trend set.
Must write and produce scripts they’ve never met.

Must surpass the Steven’s: Spielberg and King.
Must go forward like the will of OWN and reel the whole thing.

Be they eccentric or on some new stuff,
they must be resilient – the industry is rough.

Janelle is on it. She’s working within her purpose.
I’m Qui
On my joint too: shaping the youth via my surplus.
