Vintage Kindred: SUPERFLY

superfly_2018.jpg

The film dropped yesterday and I was quick to secure a movie pass.
SUPERFLY must be Shaft‘s nephew – because he kicked a lot of ass.

I’d like to think that he is kin to PROUD MARY; perhaps a nephew?
Though producers and editors really saw this project through.

The dialogue was real and the action was tight.
Superfly may even be kin to Rudy Ray’s Dolomite.

He had a no-nonsense style, Sammy Davis Jr.’s hair, and a winning smile.
He walked smooth and held no punches. Minus the cursing, he’s Samuel L.’s child.

superfly1971_gif.gifHe had a lot of structure in and around the hood.
There were chickens, strip clubs, and clip-ins;
as well as police officers up to no good.

The chickens are what steadied Super’s game.
Those chickens were cocaine.

Superfly had a mentor, his name was Scatter.
The way the cartel did him, equated to “life doesn’t matter.”

It was a reel hairy scene; in fact, there were several.
It was a non-fiction thing – so no vampires or werewolves.

tenor.gifTrevor Jackson. Who is he?
He’s the actor that played the principal lead.

Good looking and skills on poise.
I’ve seen Trevor in a few other things,
tho SUPERFLY heightens his talented noise.

Outkast’s Big Boy is in the film
He’s strong in character and keeps it real.

I like the 1970’s remake; it’s taken on a 2018 appeal.
Sex, drugs, and strip clubs — the situational composition was real.

The dialogue and story-line were easy to follow; Superfly moved with intent.
Though we didn’t see much of his family or how his pre-teen years were spent.

The film does, however, take a brief look inside
of Sup’ slinging jeers in his teen years
rendering the spoils to Scatter’s car – outside.

The flow of information is live and the cast comes through easy.
Rick Ross plays a local chickens boss — his performance was breezy.

Chris Brown was in the film but he didn’t sing any hits last night.
He was in an all-white suited gang; he danced at his characters exit of life.

This is not an upbeat film; it’s action-packed and entertaining.
It doesn’t glorify drugs but reminds us of what’s remaining.

Before Oxycodone took the spotlight, folks were getting high and horrifically locked up.
Superfly stayed in the cocaine game a little while, but not long enough to get boxed up.

In that sense, his journey was a sketchy one that delivered him like many real-lifer’s, I’m sure.
Morris Day - hair.jpgSuperfly did his thing — but selling chickens isn’t a successful entrepreneur’s cure.

And his hair? Oh dear God, Trevor Jackson has duly learned
that his fly hairdo was inspired by Morris Day  – The Time crew.
Kin to Sharpton and Brown, he sports a perm.

I loved it. Superfly is a hustler and the soundtrack did not disappoint.

The jams of this film were by one of its producer’s; they are FUTURE anoints.

A MoveMe vs A Movie

In Communication, Griot, Movies, Self Improvement on September 30, 2016 at 9:40 am

FilmProjector_ReelTapeWhat’s the difference between a #MoveMe and a #Movie?
Everything.

Just because they are both excellent examples of #Reel does not make them the same.

Over the last 7-days I have patronized Harkins Theaters for two reasons: Queen of Katwe and Magnificent 7. One was a cool #Movie and one was a familial #MoveMe. I enjoyed them both. If you have not seen them but are planning to, you may want to stop reading here and resume once you’ve seen them.

I’m not going to delve in too deep, but let’s do mount the back of MAGNIFICENT 7 with Paullets  awesome lifetime beau, Denzel:

.

magnificient7-denzel

☝🏾It’s a western
☝🏾it’s little longer than 1.5 hours
☝🏾it was dusty only by geography though wet in scripted situation.

Denzel plays the role of a US Marshal who would normally bounty hunt for justice recon but was contracted by a grieving widow to bring forth the man that who killed her husband in cold blood at the start of the film.

There are many shootings and killings along the way though the most compelling was when the Marshal found the murderer and began running off a list of personal grievances…

WHAT!?  The Marshal had a personal grievance with the “widow maker?” And like you wouldn’t you believe.

Have you seen it? It’s a Magnificent way to spend the better part of 2-hours.

I’m a horse rider myself, I love to saddle and blaze the trail.
The journey that the Mag 7 blazed was dusty as hell

But the writing held us captive for a spell and time passed smooth.
I was into “the law” and his black stallion groove.

The widow reaped her due – the Marshal just opened the door.
MAGNIFICENT 7 was a reel dimensional score.

It was good to see Denzel in this piece. My God he is fine.

Screening movies for thee and divvying the rewind.

The M7 #Movie is an awesome way to spend your time.

QUEEN OF KATWE

queen-of-katwe

NEW COMER: Madina Nalwanga portrayed Phiona and Lupita portrayed her mother.

I mean what can I say? Life is a game that must be played
and if your going up against Phiona on chess – you’ll likely be slayed.

Remember the film FRESH from way back when?
Lil’ dude would skip school to give ‘old chess heads’ a spin?

Queen of Katwe connects  past reels and yields to mind
The strategy of game when all is on the line.

Disney picked a fine film to produce with this piece.
It offers tangible confidence in an otherwises dim release.

Uganda may not be flashy in the western worlds sight
But the mind of one young girl found F3 and took flight.

2007: She learned to play chess amidst social mockery and laughter.
Though by year 2012 she was celebrated as being a Chess Master.

Born in Ugandan slum, Phiona Mutesi was poor and her hygiene wreaked,
But the way she ‘spanked in chess’ made folks sit up and think.

FRESH starred Samuel L. Jackson and Sean Nelson

This film is a champion of encouragement!
I saw a screening earlier this month and couldn’t wait to vent.

I absolutely DID cry in the theater.
This film wasn’t about any  glitz or glitter.

This film was about owning your destiny.
Lupita played Phiona’s mom. She reminded me of me.

Phiona’s mother is a fighter and she has shaped her child.
I saw myself in Phiona as well – I don’t mind the miles.

Phiona’s part was played by Madina Nalwanga – and WOW!
This young lady’s authentic talent is the cats meow!

Boom! pOW! I enjoyed her internal and external glow.
Queen of Katwe was an absolute refreshing show.

This is a #MoveMe, not just a movie.
The contents therein did groove me.

The life impact stays with you – long time.

Keeping it reel with thee in the form of Griot chimes.

What have you got up this weekend? Doing anything extra groovy?
In the event your plans aren’t in cement –  grab a friend and catch a movie

And embrace the experience.

What the L

what-the-L-qe

Good morning good people, take a hit and pass
I’m not on a mission about dissin’ – I’m all about the laugh.

Reality is running rampart, may comedy dispel,
and this little segment is something I like to call:

What The L!!

No this little ‘spit out’ has nothing to do with Samuel L,
but the fact that his pic came up on the research – was funny as hell.

Please don’t forget to laugh for a spell whilst you’re on your grind.
If there’s nothing around to invoke ‘the clown,’ laugh at your own behind.

I laugh at me all of the time.
I’m quite the clutz when I’m not in rhyme.

Not immune to falling down in public, though I’m quick to get up.
My fitness game is hardly lame, I fall and get up to keep my abs cut!

Now who’s laughing at whom?
Like I said, if I laugh at me – you know I’m-a laugh at you.

So go ‘head and do what you do. Look in the mirror and laugh
Life is only what you make it – less offense – more goofy gas.

Web design.

Father: I have a business idea. How hard is it to make a Facebook?
Me: Oh, very easy.
Friend: He doesn’t mean to make
a Facebook profile. He means to
remake all of Facebook.
Me: Oh. Very hard.
Father: Oh, OK.

It’s the weekend baby! Yes, it’s here again.
Happy Festivus! Go out and kick it with friends.

Good memories are made when you’re with loving folks
and I just armed you with a good array of jokes.

What the L! All is swell – use them and don’t be shy!
But only if you want to be the absolute parties delight!

Alright, some of these jokes are a little risque and some a tad bit strong,
I’m Qui
and they’re all good to me. When dealing jokes – you really can’t go wrong.

What The L!

They’re doing what?

In Movies, Music, Networking, News, TV Shows on May 24, 2010 at 4:54 pm

Sure Halle Berry is looking good and feeling single while doing so – but make no mistake her black book is filled with projects pending and papparazzi snoops who are relentless & neverending.

Vivica Fox has not ever been one to sit idle. I recently saw her in a film with Jean Claude Van Damm in it: “The HARD CORPS“. It was great. It reminded me that there’s more room than a little bit to showcase ones talent. The silver screen is nice, but Vivica also has a love for cable and dvd. Meow! and Look out!

Samuel L. Jackson will be holding it down in Iron Man’s 2012 “AVENGERS” – He’s also working on a few other projects so …production don’t stop per his Imdb listing. Check him out.

John Travolta and Kelly Preston are expecting a new baby! Yeaahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!! Or so recent headlines have printed. Personally, I hope it’s true. Babies yield such radiant joy -by default. Who couldn’t use more of that in an already successful life?

Alfre Woodard is doing pretty good – she’s rarely ever far from “the heat”. In fact as we speak, she’s shooting for the TV Series “Memphis Heat“. Life is sweet!

Prince is all up in the news these days, but not “the artist formerly known as”. 🙂 It’s PRINCE – GS BOYZ & Yung JUICE from Dallas; the producers of “BUBBLE GUM”that southern party music that K104 keeps playing in decent rotation. There’s no moral message to the track, but it certainly is celebratory in delivery. A party jam.

Master P can’t be forgotten…every now and then he comes to mind when I think about Louisiana music and how he opened up ‘the grind’. He’s still in the lime light — still pioneering positive eruptions. Percy Miller is still on the hunt to own his own tv network/production.

Monica has a new CD out: “STILL STANDING” and it is completely jamming. Besides being timeless in her looks her voice hasn’t aged either. Feel young again and jam Monica where she stands.

Jamie Foxx of Terrell, TX is one brother I can rarely get enough of. He sings, he acts, he cracks me up… He’s a winner! His film resume is crazy these days and to think the camera fell in love with him during his stint on the Wayan Bros.IN LIVING COLOR

Vanessa Williams is still a hot talent to me. I hate the industry ever took “the camera” off of her, but she’s a sister full of SOUL FOOD and substance, so I’m sure we’ll see her again.

I just thought I’d run down a few things you may not have known,
