Empowerment is for everyone. Everyone should always feel encouraged to be their best and Tavis Smiley concurs by backing you up with Empowerment Cards. We revealed our first card of the empowerment card deck in 2013 – it encouraged you to KNOW; however, now that YOU KNOW – todays card encourages us to beware of the boomerang of WORDS:

Surely you know how it goes down,

So why ever resort to putting someone down
when you know the same derogative comments will come back around?

When you know better, then better is expected
and please know that karma will keep you connected.

You really do need your friends and to reap a good friend, you have to be one,

Taking notes from the Alchemist

In Communication, Griot, Networking, News, Self Improvement, TV Shows on February 16, 2015 at 3:18 am

I first learned of the book, “THE ALCHEMIST” by Paulo Coelho a few years back when Will Smith raved about its simplicity on The Tavis Smiley [Talk] Show.

Had you ever heard of the book and/or its author? Well let me tell you a little bit about the author, and then I’ll share the books introduction pages with you to light the fire under your go-getter-bottom, so that you continue to WIN today. No limitations. Now about the author:

I encourage you to get the book and be The ALCHEMIST in your life – if you’re not already doing so. I wouldn’t live life any other way. Having said as much, please enjoy the following INTRODUCTION from the book “The Alchemist”::

remember receiving a letter from the American Publisher Harper Collins that said that: “reading The Alchemist was like getting up at dawn and seeing the sun rise while the rest of the world slept,” I went outside, looked up at the sky, and thought to myself: “So, the book is going to be published in English!” At the time, I was struggling to establish myself as a writer and to follow my path despite all the voices telling me it was impossible.

And little by little, my dream was becoming reality. Ten, a hundred, a thousand, a million copies sold in America. One day, a Brazilian journalist phoned to say that President Clinton had been photographed reading the book. Some time later, when I was in Turkey, I opened the magazine Vanity Fair magazine and there was Julia Roberts declaring that she adored the book. Walking alone down a street in Miami, I heard a girl telling her mother: “You must read The Alchemist!”

The book has been translated into fifty-six languages, has sold more than twenty million copies, and people are beginning to ask: What’s the secret behind such a huge success?

The only honest response is: I don’t know. All I know is that, like Santiago the shepherd boy, we all need to aware of our personal calling. What is a personal calling? It is Gods blessing, it is the path that God chose for you here on Earth. Whenever we do something that fills us with enthusiasm, we are following our legend. However, we don’t all have the courage to confront our own dream.

Why?

There are four obstacles. First: we are told from childhood onward that everything we want to do is impossible. We grow up with this idea and as the years accumulate, so do the layers of prejudice, ear, and guilt. There comes a time when our personal calling is so deeply buried in our soul as to be invisible. But it’s still there.

If we have to courage to disinter dream, we are then faced by the second obstacle: love. We know what we want to do, but are afraid of hurting those around us by abandoning everything in order to pursue our dream. We do not realize that love is just a further impetus, not something that will prevent us going forward. We do not realize that those who genuinely wish us well want us to be happy and are repaired to accompany us on that journey.

Once we have accepted that love is a stimulus, we come up against the third obstacle: fear of the defeats we will meet on the path. We who fight for our dream suffer far more when it doesn’t work out, because we cannot fall back on the old excuse: “Oh, well, I didn’t really want it anyway.” We do want it and know that we have staked everything on it and that the path of the personal calling is no easier than any other path, except that our whole heart is in this journey. Then, we warriors of light must be prepared to have patience in difficult times and to know that the Universes conspiring in our favor, even though we may not understand how.

I ask myself: are defeats necessary?

Well, necessary or not, they happen. When we first begin fighting for our dream, we have no experience and begin make many mistakes. The secret of life, though, is to fall seven times and to get up eight times.

So, why is it so important to live our personal calling if we are only going to suffer more than other people?

Because, once we have overcome the defeats— and we always do— we are filled by a greater sense of euphoria and confidence. In the silence of our hearts, we know that we are proving ourselves worthy of the miracle of life. Each day, each hour, is part of the good fight. We start to live with enthusiasm and pleasure. Intense, unexpected suffering passes more quickly than suffering that is apparently bearable; the latter goes on for years and, without our noticing, eats away at our soul, until, one day, we are no longer able to free ourselves from the bitterness and it stays with us for the rest of our lives.

Have disinterred our dream, having used the power of love to nurture it and spent many years living with the scars, we suddenly notice that what we always wanted is there, waiting for us, perhaps the very next day. Then comes the fourth obstacle: the fear of realizing the dream for which we fought all our lives.

Oscar Wilde said: “Each man kills the thing he loves.” And it’s true. The mere possibility of getting what we want fills the soul of the ordinary person with guilt. We look around at all those who have failed to get that they want and feel that we do not deserve to get what we want either. WE forgot about all the obstacles we overcame, all the suffering we endured, all the things we had to give up in order to get this far. I have known a lot of people who, when their personal calling was within their grasp, went on to commit a series of stupid mistakes and never reached their goal– when it was only a step away.

This is the most dangerous of the obstacles because it has a kind of saintly aura about it: renouncing joy and conquest. But if you believe yourself worthy of the thing you fought so hard to get, then you become an instrument of God, you help the Soul of the World, and you understand why you are here.

Empowerment CardsAffirmations are the best and so I’ve taken a liking to Tavis Smiley’s Empowerment card deck. I couldn’t help but be drawn to the box illustrations. Black art is a fine way to go if you’re marketing these cards primarily to black people. D0esn’t every race need empowering?  Well according to wikipedia, not every race needs empowering.

[Empowerment is] Then being the process of obtaining basic opportunities for
marginalized people, either directly by those people, or through the help of
non-marginalized others who share their own access to these opportunities.

Knowledge is empowering and todays empowerment card is Exercise — because to be fit is your Right:

Democrats: Delivering on ‘A Promise’

In Griot, News, Politics on March 23, 2010 at 3:23 pm

Today Our President has literally made history by signing the Health Care Reform Bill into LAW. Vice President Biden introduced the Presidents signage with a quote by the classic poet Virgil that says “The greatest wealth is health”.

Once President Obama took the floor he said, “This legislation will take 4 years to fully impliment the reforms but a host of desperately needed reforms will take effect –
Right away – This year.

This year we will offer tax credits to about four million small business men and women to help cover the cost of insurance for their employees.

This year tens of thousands of uninsured Americans with pre-existing conditions will finally be able to get the coverage that they need.

This year insurance companies will no longer be able to drop insurance coverage of people when they get ‘too sick’. They won’t be able to place lifetime limits or restrictive annual limits on the care that they need.

This year all new insurance plans will be required to offer free preventive care and young people will be able to stay on their parents policy until they’re 26 years old.

This year seniors who fall in “the donut hole” (coverage gap) will get help…”

He went on and on to make it clear
That our beloved Sr. citizens have nothing to fear.

He went on to give due credit to politicians of the past
Who knew that a nations strength w/o healthcare wouldn’t last.

Delivering on ‘A Promise’ one deed at a time.
Much can be accomplished under Pelosi’s shine.

Much can be accomplished if we all come together
and bond out of humanity and less by ‘party weather’.

As Health Care Reform gets under way, there are other issues crying out:
like what Dr. Cornel West & Tavis Smiley have been talking about.

Well it ain’t nothing new – nor is it something we can afford to drop;
Because our President is black, is reason not for activism to stop.

Contrary to what many may want to believe – HATE is alive and well.
When the House was passing the health care bill – “slur restraints” were shot to hell.

The gays are duly making noise, as not to be pushed aside or overlooked
and immigrants are on the vent – requesting more RIGHTS on the books.

A good President can’t get off the hook, once everyone realizes he can ‘get her done’,
I’m Qui
Glad to be living Obama History
– being the recipient of ‘A HEALTHY Promise’ sure is fun.

If obtaining Health Care has been “a Big F**king Deal” — soon you can get some!
Vice President Joe Biden and his “raw quotes” respectively bar none. 🙂
